Another week on the PGA Tour and another European winner - and this one is long overdue.

Belgium’s Thomas Detry strolled to a magnificent seven-shot victory at the WM Phoenix Open - his first success on either the PGA Tour or DP World Tour. And boy did he do it in style. He has long been regarded as a world-class golfer but has never before been able to close the deal.

This was the week when he silenced all the doubters. The 32-year-old carded rounds of 66, 64, 65 and 65 to finish at 24 under par overall, ahead of Americans Daniel Berger and Michael Kim, who both ended at 17 under.

Understandably, he was highly emotional afterwards. He said: "It's incredible, it's what dreams are made of. That walk on the last hole was incredible. I've given myself plenty of chances in the past but never been able to conclude. I'm just so happy."

Detry closed out the win with four successive birdies in his six-under-par round and was immediately congratulated by his wife and two young children.

Former world number one Jordan Spieth and South African Christiaan Bezuidenhout were tied in fourth place on 16 under. Scotland's Robert MacIntyre shared sixth place on 15 under with American Will Chandler and world number 11 Justin Thomas, who carded a final round of 67.

Detry, who had finished runner-up twice in 65 events, started the day with a five-shot lead in Scottsdale, Arizona.

It is his first professional win since the World Cup of Golf with Thomas Pieters in 2018.

Although the result was never really in doubt, he came under some pressure from playing partner Berger when the 31-year-old picked up his fifth birdie of the day on the par-five 15th to briefly close the gap to just two shots.

But Detry stayed calm and hit an incredible approach on the par-three 16th stadium hole to set up a tap-in birdie that effectively sealed the title.

Player Profile

Detry was born in 1993 in Uccle, Belgium. He started playing golf when he was five, but also played tennis and lawn hockey. He started competing in international golf tournaments when he was 13 years old. He studied at the Golf Flanders Topsportschool Vlaanderen in Hasslet until 2012.

In 2009, when he was 16 years old, Detry won the Dutch Junior Open. After being part of the winning Belgian team at the 2010 European Boys’ Team Championship in Turkey, Detry was selected for the Junior Ryder Cup in 2010 and the Jacques Leglise Trophy team event that pits Continental Europe against GB&I in 2010 and 2011.

He represented Belgium at the Eisenhower Trophy three times, first time, in 2010, only 17 years old. He also represented Belgium at the European Amateur Team Championship and Europe in the Palmer Cup in 2014 and 2015.

He was named the best Belgian amateur golfer in 2013 and 2015.

After winning the 2016 Big Ten Championship, he was ranked the 5th best amateur golfer in the world.

Detry turned professional in June 2016 and started competing on the Challenge Tour, making the cut in his first 10 starts, culminating in his win at the 2016 Bridgestone Classic. With this win, he equalled the record for lowest under-par finish ever on the Challenge Tour at 29 under par, and set a new record for the win by the widest margin ever on the Challenge Tour - 12 ahead of the runner-up. He also broke the course record at Heythrop Park with his first round of 60.

On 24 November 2018, Detry won the World Cup of Golf with partner Thomas Pieters.

In August 2020, Detry twice finished runner-up on the DP World Tour, at the Hero Open at the Belfry and at the Celtic Classic at Celtic Manor. Both times he was beaten by Sam Horsfield.

He has made 161 starts on the DP World Tour, making 122 starts, with five runner-ups, five third places and 21 further top 10s. This was his 68th start on the PGA Tour, making 54 cuts, with two runner-up finishes, six top fives and 10 top 10s. He is second in the FedEx Cup standings and 22nd in the world rankings.
