It has not all been plain sailing for Poland’s Adrian Meronk since he signed for LIV Golf but he put it all right by winning the season opener in Riyadh, going wire to wire.

The 31-year-old won his first individual title since joining LIV Golf prior to last season, shooting a one-under 71 to finish at 17 under, two ahead of Jon Rahm and Sebastian Munoz. Dean Burmester and Lucas Herbert tied for fourth at 14 under.

Meronk, who pocketed $4m, said: "It feels super special, I was nervous all day. I played quite good in the beginning, then it was a fight at the end. But I am super happy that I crossed the line. It was very satisfying, definitely."

The team event was won by Rahm’s Legion XIII for the second consecutive season, having captured the title last year in Mayakoba when making their debut as LIV Golf’s first expansion team.

They began the final round with an 11-shot lead, which ended up as their winning margin. Their winning total of 50 under for the week was just three shots off the record low by any team in a LIV Golf event, with Riyadh being the first tournament in which all four scores counted for every round. Legion XIII won the LIV Golf season opener for the second consecutive season, having captured the title last year in Mayakoba when making their debut as LIV Golf’s first expansion team.

They won three more times in 2024 and now have five wins in their first 15 LIV Golf tournaments.

Rahm led his team with a five-under 67, with Tyrrell Hatton shooting 70 and Caleb Surratt 71. Tom McKibbin, the 22-year-old from Northern Ireland, shot even par to finish at 10 under and tie for 15th in his LIV Golf debut for Legion XIII.

Rahm said: "Luckily we had a nice cushion going into today and we could afford to not have our best day as a team. But still, it was a decisive win and very happy we got to start the year again like this."

Player Profile

Meronk was born in Hamburg in May 1993 but grew up in Poland. He turned professional in 2016, played on the Challenge Tour  in 2017 and was runner-up in the Ras Al Khaimah Challenge. In 2019 he won the Challenge Tour’s Open de Portugal and finished in a tie for third at the D+D Real Czech Challenge.

He became the first Polish golfer to qualify for the DP World Tour and his victory at the Irish Open in 2022 meant he became the first Pole to win on tour.

He enjoyed a hugely consistent season in 2021-22, finishing third at the Dutch Open, tied third at the Catalunya Championship and sixth at the Soul Open. His finish at the Dutch Open meant he qualified for the 150th Open at St Andrews.

In December 20022 he won the Australian Open, beating home favourite Adam Scott in the process.

He played consistently in 2023, finishing in a tie for 10th at the Abu Dhabi Championship, tied fourth at the Ras Al Khaimah Championship, tied 21st at the Korea Championship, tied fifth at the KLM Open, tied third at the BMW International Open and tied 13th at the European Masters.

He also played in the WGC Dell Technologies Matchplay and The Masters, where he missed the cut. He also missed the cut at the Bermuda Championship and Arnold Palmer Invitational but finished in a tie for 45th at the Genesis Invitational and was tied 14th at the Honda Classic.

He won the Italian Open at Marco Simone in May 2023 and was controversially overlooked by Luke Donald for the Ryder Cup, who opted to select rookie Ludvig Aberg instead. It was a decision that angered Meronk, who felt he had done enough to make the team.

In October 2023 he won the Andalucia Masters, taking him to third place in the Race to Dubai, with only Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm ahead of him.

Soon afterwards he announced that he was moving to LIV Golf.

He won four times on the DP World Tour and in 110 starts made the cut 75 times, finishing second three times, third on six occasions and enjoying 12 top-10 finishes. He is currently ranked 153rd in the world.
