Exciting Changes Are Coming to Historic Suffolk Golf Course
Felixstowe Ferry Golf Club is one of the finest courses in Suffolk and is a hugely popular winter venue, but its qualities will only become further enhanced as work has started on the building of a new state-of-the-art new golf clubhouse and five luxury villas.
Ipswich-based construction company SEH French joined representatives from Felixstowe Ferry Golf Club on Wednesday, January 8 to mark the start of the works, which will see the 1,020 sqm new clubhouse, public cafe and public toilets built on-site.
Complete with a sloped, living roof, the A+ energy rated building will help futureproof the golf club while making the sport more accessible to the community.
Mick Thomas, Chairman of Felixstowe Ferry Golf Club, said: "We are delighted to be building a new state of the art Clubhouse here at Felixstowe Ferry Golf Club.
"Not only does this provide a fabulous new facility for our members and visitors to the club but crucially it will preserve the opportunity of golf for future generations.
"We are incredibly proud of our heritage as the 5th oldest club in England and with nearly 150 years of golf played here, we are now looking forward to having a clubhouse that meets the modern needs of everyone - including the wider community - and matches the reputation of our excellent golf course."
More than 300 lorry loads of soil are being excavated at the start of the build - which will be reused on the golf course rather than being carted through Felixstowe to remote landfill. This further boosts the scheme’s environmental benefits. The clubhouse will also be fitted with an array of solar panels to power its operations with renewable energy.
The five homes, marketed as the Balfour Place development, all boast sea and golf course views within the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty - and include club memberships as part of their sale.
Simon Girling, Director at SEH French, said: "It is an honour for us to work alongside such a historic club on this prestigious project.
"The impressive clubhouse will blend perfectly with the local environment, while the new homes at Balfour Place will be among the most striking properties available on the market.
"We look forward to seeing members and visitors enjoying the 19th hole once works are completed in 2026."
Phil Branton, Director at architects Wincer Kievenaar, added: "We have enjoyed bringing this thoughtful and innovative design to life, harmonising the new clubhouse and houses with their surroundings.
"Working within a National Landscape, we embraced a collaborative and problem-solving approach to realise our client’s vision while respecting the site’s unique qualities and its impact on visitors and users.
"This project blends heritage and modern innovation, honouring the legacy of Felixstowe Ferry Golf Club while setting a benchmark for sustainability and design excellence.
"By balancing creativity with practicality, we hope these spaces exemplify how good design can exceed expectations and offer lasting value to the community."
Three homes at Balfour Place remain available - with more information available via www.balfourplace.co.uk or the appointed agents www.exquisitehome.co.uk.
