Will McIlroy End His Major Drought - 2025 Golf Predictions

By: | Mon 30 Dec 2024

IT is going to be another big year in the world of professional golf, with The Open returning to Northern Ireland and Europe attempting to successfully defend the Ryder Cup on American soil.

Will Rory McIlroy finally end his major drought? Can Charley Hull land a women’s major?

Please don’t put your life savings on any of these, but here are my predictions for 2025.

Rory McIlroy

Men's Majors

April 10-13 - The Masters - Augusta National Golf Club, Augusta, Georgia.

To win: Scottie Scheffler will start as favourite to defend his title but Ludvig Aberg ran him a close second on his major debut in 2024. And I tip him to go one better in 2025.

May 15-18 - PGA Championship - Quail Hollow Club, Charlotte, North Carolina.

To win: Everybody and his dog will be tipping Rory McIlroy to win on what is his favourite golf course on the planet but I believe that Xander Schauffele will be making a successful defence. Sorry!

June 12-15 - US Open - Oakmont Country Club, Oakmont, Pennsylvania.

To win: He has finished runner-up in successive years. But 2025 is the year when McIlroy finally gets the job done again after 11 years without winning a major.

July 17-20 - The Open - Royal Portrush Golf Club, Portrush, Northern Ireland.

To win: And this is another major where the pressure on McIlroy will be enormous. I believe, and fervently hope, that this could be the one that sees Tommy Fleetwood finally take it over the finishing line.

September 26-28 - The Ryder Cup - Bethpage Black Course, Farmingdale, New York.

To win - I would love it to be otherwise but I am afraid that the USA are going to be too strong for Luke Donald’s team. My one fervent hope is that the event is not ruined by rowdy crowd behaviour, but I fear the worst.

FedEx Cup

It cannot be anybody other than Scottie Scheffler

Race to Dubai

McIlroy will be celebrating title number seven

Women's Majors

April 24-27 - The Chevron Championship - The Club at Carlton Woods, The Woodlands, Texas.

To win: World Number One Nelly Korda claimed this title 12 months ago as she enjoyed a period of utter dominance and will expect to make a successful defence

May 29-June 1 - US Women's Open -  Erin Hills Golf Course, Erin, Wisconsin.

To win: We have waited too long for Charley Hull to land her first major. She has gone close in the US Open and I fancy her to finally break her duck in 2025

June 19-22 - KPMG Women's PGA Championship - Fields Ranch East at PGA Frisco, Frisco, Texas.

To win: Lydia Ko has achieved a huge amount in the women’s game and I expect her to add to her major tally in Texas.

July 10-13 - Evian Championship - Evian Resort Golf Club, Evian-les-Baines, France.

To win: Linn Grant has the game to become a serial winner on the LPGA Tour and it would be a huge surprise if she fails to land her first major in 2025.

July 31-August 3 - Women's Open -  Royal Porthcawl Golf Club, Porthcawl, Wales.

To win: Never will there be a better chance for a European golfer to win a women’s major. It is almost certain that the wind will be blowing and the weather will be cool. The Clements Shilling will be going on Leona Maguire.
