Johannes Veerman What's In The Bag And Player Profile

American Johannes Veerman claimed his second DP World Tour title in dramatic fashion after a final round of 69 turned out to be good enough to overturn a five-shot deficit and win him the 2024 Nedbank Golf Challenge by a single shot.

But it was the man in second place, Aldrich Potgieter, who served notice that we may be about to witness a generational talent. At just 20 years of age, the South African has already won on the Korn Ferry Tour and seems destined for great things within the game.

Veerman said: "I didn't have the best seasons the past two years. I put a lot of work in, me and my team - countless hours.

"To win this season, to start off this season with a win is indescribable. I knew I had a chance but actually thought I might have lost it on the 16th when I three-putted and missed that putt. That one really hurt but it doesn't even matter!"

Veerman started the day five strokes off the lead but carded six birdies and three bogeys in testing conditions to set a five-under-par clubhouse target that nobody could match.

And it went right to the wire, with a bogey on the last denying South African Potgieter the chance to face Veerman in a play-off.

Potgieter had looked on course to claim a memorable home win when the third-round leader restored his three-shot overnight advantage with a birdie at the 10th.

But on a breathless afternoon at Gary Player Country Club, the 20-year-old stumbled to a triple bogey at the par-three 12th to hand Veerman the lead.

But Potgeiter fought back with a birdie at the 14th to take the lead again.

With Veerman parring the 18th, Potgieter bogeyed the 16th to join him on that number before missing a good birdie chance on the 17th.

That left them locked together as Potgieter teed off on the 18th, where a closing bogey handed Veerman victory on his Sun City debut.

Potgieter, Romain Langasque and Matthew Jordan finished in a tie for second one shot behind Veerman.

Player Profile

Johannes Veerman was born in Orange County, California on May 17, 1992.

He turned professional in 2015 and played on the Asian Development Tour in 2016, winning the Taifong Open. Later in the year, he finished tied-second at the Indonesian Open on the Asian Tour.

In 2017, he finished second at the Yeangder Tournament Players Championship and the following year was runner-up at the Queen’s Cup.

In 2019, Veerman earned a DP World Tour card for the 2020 season after coming through qualifying school. He earned his card in dramatic fashion, moving from 144th after the first two days all the way up to a tie for 13th place after closing rounds of 67-67-66-66.

He recorded five top-10 finishes in his debut season; the best finish coming with a tied-for-fourth place at the Cyprus Showdown. In 2021, he was contention to win at the Irish Open, but late bogeys saw him ultimately finish in third place, four shots behind winner Lucas Herbert. This result however secured him a place in the 2021 Open. A month later, Veerman won his first DP World Tour event at the Czech Masters, shooting a final round of 68 to beat Sean Crocker and Tapio Puikkanen by two shots.

His victory in South Africa takes him to the top of the Race to Dudai.
