Discover The Best Golf Hotel in Portugal
Portugal is home to many incredible golf resorts and venues, so it was quite a moment when Praia D’El Rey Marriott Golf & Beach Resort was named ‘Portugal’s Best Golf Hotel’ at the 2024 World Golf Awards, an honour received following a period of large investment into the hotel’s facilities.
Held in Funchal, Madeira, on Friday November 22, the 2024 World Golf Awards’ evening rewards excellence in the golf tourism market. With a pair of acclaimed 18-hole courses on site - the resort’s namesake layout and West Cliffs Golf Links - Praia D’El Rey Marriott Golf & Beach Resort has long been one of the finest hotels on Portugal’s Silver Coast, and one of the best in Europe for travelling golfers.
But it is the recent investment that has taken the experience up another level.
Investment at the resort has seen the hotel enhance its luxury lifestyle offering after completing a comprehensive upgrade of its Kalyan Spa and indoor pool area, giving guests the ultimate opportunity to unwind and relax. Improvements in the hydrothermal area have included the addition of a vitality pool and a relaxation pool, while a modern Finish sauna, Turkish bath area and sensory shower have also been added. 2024 marked the first full year the hotel has been operation with the new improvements.
António Ferreira da Silva, golf sales director at Praia D’El Rey Marriott Golf & Beach Resort, said: "To be named ‘Portugal’s Best Golf Hotel’ is a real honour and one that we are delighted to have received following substantial work at our hotel.
"When it comes to golf in Portugal, we feel we offer one of the best 36-hole experience. When you combine the golf with the five-star quality of our hotel and the outstanding service, you really get an experience to remember."
Few golf courses in the world have attracted as much attention and acclaim as West Cliffs since it opened six years ago. Designed by Cynthia Dye, the 6,382m, par-72 layout was created across 200 hectares of natural landscape, rolling sand dunes and coastal vegetation, and offers sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean from each hole.
Also ranked inside Europe’s top 50 courses, Praia D’El Rey’s 18-hole championship course - which was designed by Cabell Robinson - is set amidst a combination of extensive pine forests and undulating dunes and features spectacular views over the Atlantic and the Berlengas Islands beyond.

Elsewhere, Quinta do Lago's South Course was named Portugal's Best Golf Course 2024. The Golfshake Team visited this destination earlier in the year and Matt Holbrook reviewed the South Course, which he concluded: "I found the South Course to be the pick of the bunch, although I can easily entertain an argument for all three courses. There is such a selection of holes, nothing ever feels the same, and whether it's raised tees or greens, nasty fairway bunkers, devilishly sloping greens or tight tee shots, the variety on offer is simply outstanding. The condition is incredible, in particular the greens - again, a feature of all three courses at Quinta do Lago - some of the best I have seen."
