Prescription Sports Glasses For Golf Review
Noel Coward once said "getting old is not great but consider the alternative."
I am now reaching the time in my golfing life when I can hit the ball further with a driver than I can see it. My bus pass application is pending and I have taken to using a yellow ball in place of the traditional white one.
I sometimes struggle to pick up the flight of a white ball against a cloudy or grey sky. When I play golf I see it as my duty to monitor my playing partner's ball progress in the air so I can help them. I expect a similar level of support in return.
I wear glasses for driving both cars and golf balls so I try to ensure I have the best optical devices to give me the greatest benefit. Varifocal glasses take some getting used to when golfing, especially putting.
The bottom of the lens is designed for clear reading and the top for far sighted support. When first using this type of glasses I looked like a nodding donkey or meerkat as I moved my head to a point where I could focus on the ball prior to executing my swing.
Putting using an alignment aid drawn on the ball helps, especially when matched with a line on my putter face, but I now rely mainly on my first read and stick to it.
Finding The Perfect Glasses
I was approached recently by an American company who are keen to support sport users to obtain the best quality bespoke eyewear for the best price by completing all the work online.
SmartBuyGlasses.com have over 15 years of experience, and are a leading global eyewear retailer. They offer a diverse selection of 300+ brands encompassing eyeglasses, sunglasses, and contact lenses.
All of the most popular brands are featured and the selection process is remarkably straightforward.
I went to my local opticians and undertook a free eye test. After the age of 60 these are free every two years in the UK. This resulted in a comprehensive standard report that can be used by any optical manufacturer to create bespoke eyewear.
The company then asked me to visit their website and undertake a series of simple measurements using a credit card to assess my PD Pupillary Distance. This ensures that the focal point of my vision is placed in the most convenient part of the lens.
I was then asked to download a picture of my face using a three-dimensional facility. Using this image, it was then easy to try on a host of virtual frame sizes and styles using my face as a template. I was surprised at how easy this process was.
Having made my choice (in reality that of my wife), I pressed a button and submitted my request for a pair of state of the art Oakley Sports glasses.
I wanted a light frame as sometimes playing in rain causes a hassle keeping the lens clear from rain drops. I wear a cap to protect it but carrying a drying cloth in really heavy downpours is not always practical. Having many focal points on the lens caused by rain drops is distracting. I repeatedly try to dry and wipe them during the time I am waiting to play my shots.
I also have had issues with the top of previous glasses fogging over near the bridge of my nose in very warm weather when I am hot and sweaty. The choice of frame was deemed to be at fault and the ones I selected were intended to avoid this problem as well.
It was easy to get advice from the company and with the selection made I simply waited for the package to be delivered.
Within five days it arrived, ecologically packaged in fully recyclable material, the glasses were all I had hoped for and more. Protected in an excellent branded case with a bag and lens wipes.
The Results
In the last three weeks I have used them in sideways rain and adverse weather in the UK and also glorious Portuguese sunshine.
The sports frames are light but designed to stay connected during what can sometimes be a violent swing path. Reminiscent of an octopus fighting its way out of a phone box, mine isn’t a gracefully efficient means of propelling a golf ball. If they stay connected to my head throughout a game then they will stay connected to anyone else.
I selected lens that became sunglasses in the sunshine and they worked beautifully well. Playing Palmeres near Lagos with its three nine-hole loops of different styles was a perfect venue for trialling new eyewear.
They worked perfectly against the sandy backdrop of the beach layout and were even more effective in the early morning light of the parkland settings. Using the yellow ball also helped and I kept lost balls down to absolute minimum during the week away.
The reading part of the lens was also excellent allowing me to read a book easily during the flights. Dispensing with the need for a pair of accessible "readers" was a delight.
I am very satisfied with my new glasses in both style, ease of selection and comfort. They worked perfectly from very first use and I will definitely use the company again such was the savings I achieved by using this method.
