Everyone remembers Tiger Woods winning the US Open by 15 shots and the Masters by 12, which is a margin that Cristie Kerr matched at the LPGA Championship in 2010.

Back in the day, both Old Tom Morris and Young Tom Morris became Champion Golfer of the Year in runaways at Prestwick, but how about this performance from England's Dominic Clemons, who won the Scottish Men's Open Championship by 17 (yes, SEVENTEEN) strokes at the weekend.

And he achieved this at Muirfield, one of the most revered and challenging links tests in the game.

The 21-year-old Englishman carded rounds of 68, 65, 65 and 62 for a stunning total of 260 (-24) and a hugely impressive win at a sun-kissed and blowy Muirfield.

From a field of 144 starters from 24 nations around the world, it was the golfer from Cambridge who proved a class above his rivals with a near spotless performance.

In the course of 72 holes over the renowned Open Championship venue, Clemons posted a staggering 28 birdies and just four bogeys to become the 11th English winner of this event.

And it’s not the first time the Stetson University student has lifted silverware on Scotland’s Golf Coast of East Lothian.

Eight years ago, Clemons travelled north and won the Scottish Boys’ Under 14 Open just a few miles down the coast from Muirfield at Craigielaw.

In the present day, with dad Mike on the bag, Clemons built a one-shot lead after 36 holes. Then he surged clear and wiped out his rivals by playing the final two rounds in 15 under par.

He said: "When it's your day, it's your day.

"When I was out there, I wasn't thinking about what it means to win round Muirfield but now it's sinking in.

"My dad was pushing the trolley and tee to green we shared a few opinions but he left me to it.

"He's laid-back and it was good to have him out there and to have family around me after all they've done down the years.

"My record round this part of Scotland is weird. I've loved links golf since I was a kid. I enjoy it, hitting the shots you need to hit."

With next year’s championship a few miles down the road at North Berwick, Clemons will be keen to defend on his favourite stretch of Scottish coastline.
