Laurie Canter Player Profile And What's In The Bag

By: | Mon 03 Jun 2024

It has been a long and circuitous route, but England’s Laurie Canter has finally landed his maiden DP World Tour title.

The 34-year-old kept it together on a challenging final day to claim the European Open at Green Eagle in Hamburg by two shots.

He said: "This is all I have ever wanted to do since I turned pro, so it is really hard to rationalise, but I am really happy.

"It went my way today when in the past it hasn't. Probably now that I've done it, I look back at when I didn't do it and it wasn't so much what I was doing; it was other people [snatching victory]. It happened for me today and I think from my perspective, I kept putting one foot in front of the other. I know how to play golf.

"Even on the 18th, I was thinking about the past and things that could go wrong, so it was good to hit it on the right side of the fairway where I wanted it. It will probably take a while to digest everything that has happened."

Canter shared the lead with Guido Migliozzi on 12-under heading into the final round in Hamburg and shot a one-under 72 to take his first trophy after four previous runner-up finishes on the DP World Tour.

While Migliozzi had a day he will want to forget, Canter birdied his first hole of the day but then bogeyed the fifth and 10th before finding top gear on the back nine with birdies at the 11th, 15th and 16th to take control. He drained a putt of almost 40 feet at the 16th to take him three clear of Austria’s Bernd Wiesberger.

Canter proceeded to bogey 17 but then parred 18 to finish on 13-under, clear of Wiesberger and Thriston Lawrence on 11-under.

South African Lawrence shot the round of the day, a five-under 68, to move 12 places up the leaderboard, with Migliozzi forced to settle for a share of eighth spot on seven-under after a five-over final round of 78 that featured four bogeys and a double bogey.

Player Profile

Laurie Canter was born in Bath on November 3, 1989.

He won the South African Amateur Championship in 2010 -  a trip he saved up for by working at the nine-hole course across the road from his home. The same year he was also a member of the England team that won the European Amateur Team Championship. He qualified for the 2010 Open but missed the cut. Canter won the 2011 Spanish Amateur Open Championship.

He turned professional in 2011 and played on the Challenge Tour until 2013 before dropping down to the EuroPro Tour in 2014 and 2015. He has come through qualifying school for the DP World Tour on four occasions. He qualified in 2015, 2016 and 2017 but failed to keep his card on each occasion. After returning to the Challenge Tour he finished tied for fifth in the 2019 Q-School. He finally achieved some success on the main tour in 2020, enjoying his first top-10 finish at the Hero Open, followed by a tie for fifth at the Wales Open and runner-up finishes at the Portugal Masters and Italian Open. He also finished in a tie for second at the BMW PGA Championship in 2021. In 2022, Canter joined LIV Golf and was suspended and fined by the DP World Tour. It was a move that has not really worked out for Canter. In 2023, he was retained as a reserve by LIV Golf. At the promotions event, he lost in a playoff for the final spot on a team roster for 2024 and is still being played as a reserve, which means he has no guarantees of playing. A loophole in the DP World Tour’s rules has allowed him to compete this season.

In 142 starts on the DP World Tour he has made 82 cuts. He started the European Open in 26th place in the Race to Dubai thanks to three top-10 finishes, including a second place at the Mauritius Open and a tie for fourth at the Australian Open. His win in Hamburg takes him to eighth in the rankings.
