Pablo Larrazabal suffered heartbreak when he failed to par the final hole in regulation play and ultimately lost the Bahrain Championship in a playoff.

The Spaniard led for much of the final day but pulled his approach at the 18th and left himself a treacherous 40-foot putt. He left his first effort eight feet short, missed and ended the day tied with English pair Laurie Canter and Daniel Brown

Canter went on to win his second DP World Tour title at the first playoff hole with a magnificent birdie after Larrazabal found the water and Brown failed to get up and down from the sand and finished with a bogey.

Canter hit a glorious approach on the playoff hole and, with two putts to win, calmly rolled in the birdie putt. He also won the European Open in June last year and now has his sights set on the Ryder Cup.

Larrazabal was looking to claim his 10th title on the DP World Tour and looked to have the tournament in the bag.

Canter shot 69 in the final round while Larrazabal and Brown both had 70s. The three finished on 14-under par, one stroke ahead of David Puig (64), Richie Ramsay (68), Ivan Cantero (69) and Martin Couvra (70).

Canter said: "To be honest, I struggled with my game over the first two days but putted really well. Today I struck the ball great but did not putt well. I feel for Pablo after what happened to him on the final hole but I am thrilled to win again. It feels great."

Player Profile

Laurie Canter was born in Bath on November 3, 1989.

He won the South African Amateur Championship in 2010 -  a trip he saved up for by working at the nine-hole course across the road from his home. The same year he was also a member of the England team that won the European Amateur Team Championship. He qualified for the 2010 Open but missed the cut. Canter won the 2011 Spanish Amateur Open Championship.

He turned professional in 2011 and played on the Challenge Tour until 2013 before dropping down to the EuroPro Tour in 2014 and 2015. He has come through qualifying school for the DP World Tour on four occasions. He qualified in 2015, 2016 and 2017 but failed to keep his card on each occasion. After returning to the Challenge Tour he finished tied for fifth in the 2019 Q-School. He finally achieved some success on the main tour in 2020, enjoying his first top-10 finish at the Hero Open, followed by a tie for fifth at the Wales Open and runner-up finishes at the Portugal Masters and Italian Open. He also finished in a tie for second at the BMW PGA Championship in 2021.

In 2022, Canter joined LIV Golf. As a result he was suspended and fined by the DP World Tour and ultimately did not retain his exemption status at the end of the season. In 2023, he was retained as a reserve by LIV Golf. He substituted for Cleeks team captain Martin Kaymer in the first three events of the season, and for Sam Horsfield on the Majesticks team, for several events after he withdrew injured during the fourth event in Adelaide. At the promotions event, he lost in a playoff for the final spot on a team roster for 2024 and returned to the DP World Tour, winning the European Open.

He played for GB&I in the Team Cup.

He started the week in ninth place in the Race to Dubai after finishing third at the Dubai Desert Classic and now moves up to second. This was his 157th start and he has made 92 cuts. He has won twice, finished second four times, third three times and had nine top-10 finishes.
