Lucas Glover Player Profile And What's In The Bag

By: | Mon 07 Aug 2023

Lucas Glover is walking on air. Having won the Wyndham Championship to secure his place in the FedEx Cup playoffs, he defeated Patrick Cantlay in a sudden-death playoff to add the St Jude Championship seven days later and give himself a very real chance of securing the $18m prize at the season-ending Tour Championship at East Lake next week.

Glover held off a world-class field, including Tommy Fleetwood and Rory McIlroy, as he joined the elite field of 50 who will battle it out at this week’s BMW Championship before that field is whittled down to just 30 for East Lake - and Glover already knows he will be in that field.

Glover won with a par on the first play-off hole - the 18th - after Cantlay's tee shot found the water.

The pair had earlier topped the 72-hole leaderboard on 15 under par at TPC Southwind in Memphis.

Fleetwood and McIlroy tied for third one shot further back on 14 under.

"If you told me this three months ago, I'd tell you you're crazy," said Glover. "But at the same time, if you asked me legitimately did I think I was capable, I'd say yes, even then. It's just one of those sad ways athletes are wired. We always believe in ourselves no matter how bad it is."

For Fleetwood it was yet another near miss, having begun the final round two shots off the lead and missing a birdie putt at the 18th that would have seen him join Glover and Cantlay in the play-off. It was the 32-year-old's fifth top-10 finish in his past six starts, having had at least a share of the lead at some point in four of those.

"It's better than being nowhere near," said Fleetwood, who carded a final-round two-under 68. "Of course, it's frustrating, but I think I have to look at it in a positive way, be proud of the golf I'm playing and the work that we're doing. I haven't done loads wrong, and I'm feeling very, very comfortable. It's just trusting that it will happen and keep playing my game."

The St Jude Championship was the first leg of the FedEx Cup play-offs, with the top 50 in the standings from the 70-player field advancing to this week's BMW Championship, from which only the top 30 in season points qualify for the Tour Championship in two weeks in Atlanta.

Glover, who only qualified for the play-offs with that Wyndham Championship victory, moves up to fourth in the FedEx Cup standings.

Player Profile

Glover was born in Greenville, South Carolina on November 12, 1979. He is one of the few professionals who does not wear a glove.

He started playing at the age of three and was a top junior golfer. He played for the USA at the 2001 Walker Cup.

He turned professional in 2002 and joined the Nationwide Tour, where he spent two seasons. He finished 17th on the money list in 2003 and gains this PGA Tour card.

In his rookie season on tour in 2004, Glover made 17 of 30 cuts while recording two top-10s and five top-25s but failed to keep his card. However, he went to Q-School and regained it and the following year he won the Funai Classic when he holed a bunker shot at the final hole. He failed to win in 2006 and 2007 but had plenty of top-10 finishes.

In 2008 he finished in 105th place on the money list but this life changed forever in 2009 when he won the US Open at Bethpage Black. He won the Wells Fargo Championship in 2011 and then suffered a serious wrist injury in 2012 that limited his playing time. He lost his card again in 2015 but regained it at the Web.com Tour Finals.

Sadly, he had to head back to the Web.com Tour finals at the end of 2018, but he finished eighth to regain his card once again. In 2021 he won the John Deere Classic.

He has twice represented the USA at the Presidents Cup, playing on the winning teams in 2007 and 2009.

Glover has enjoyed some good recent form, finishing tied fourth at the Rocket Mortgage, tied sixth at the John Deere Classic and fifth at the Barbasol Championship.

He started the Wyndham Championship in 112th place in the FedEx Cup standings and 117th in the world rankings. After winning the Wyndham he climbed to 49th place in the FedEx Cup standings. He is now fourth in the FedEx Cup standings and ranked 30th in the world.
