Sepp Straka Player Profile And What's In The Bag
Article Updated in January 2025
Austria's Sepp Straka picked up his third PGA Tour title, winning The American Express by two shots. He had an astonishing week, only dropping his first shot at the 16th and then adding another at the last when the tournament was already in the bag.
It ended his hopes of breaking the tournament scoring record. Nevertheless, he still finished on 25 under par after a final round of 70.
Straka was never in danger of losing after starting the day with a four-shot lead on the Pete Dye Stadium Course at PGA West. He was never really threatened in the final round by the likes of Justin Thomas, Jason Day and Charley Hoffman.
Straka's lead never dropped under three shots until his final putt, and his play was so consistent that he didn't miss a green in regulation until the 14th hole, and then only by a foot. The bogey six on the 16th hole came when he led by four shots.
The win earned the 31-year-old Straka his first title since the 2023 John Deere Classic, 500 FedEx Cup points and the $1,584,000 first-place cheque, the largest of his career.
Thomas produced a bogey-free 66 and finished two shots back in second place at 23-under, but the two-time PGA Championship winner had started the day six shots behind Straka. It was his second near-miss in the tournament in two years, having finished tied for third in 2024.
Player Profile
Straka was born in Vienna on May 1, 1993. He is 6ft 3in and weighs 235lb.
His mother is American and his father is from Austria. The family moved to America when Straka was 14. He has a twin brother, Sam, and the pair represented Austria at the European Boys’ Team Championship in 2011.
Straka played college golf at the University of Georgia from 2011 until 2016.
He turned professional in 2016 and played on the PGA Tour Canada and then joined the Web.com Tour in 2017. He became the first Austrian to gain a PGA Tour card after finished tied for 20th place in the Web.com Tour money list in 2018.
In 2020-21 he finished 106th in the FedEx Cup standings to retain his PGA Tour card.
But then came a new season. It began with a series of missed cuts for the Austrian. But then he won the Honda Classic and followed it by finishing joint third at the RBC Heritage and second at the FedEx St Jude.
He ended up finishing seventh in the FedEx Cup standings and began the new season with a second place at the Sanderson Farms Classic.
In 2023 he won the John Deere Classic, a victory that took him to 18th place in the FedEx Cup standings and 27th place in the world rankings. He would go on to make Luke Donald’s European Ryder Cup team that thrashed the USA at Marco Simone GC in Italy.
This was his 169th start on the PGA Tour. He now has three wins, three runner-up finishes, two thirds, 14 top fives and 21 top 10s, missing 68 cuts. He has career earnings in excess of $19.5m.
