Charles Howell III - The First LIV Golf Winner of 2023

By: | Mon 27 Feb 2023

CHARLES HOWELL III fired a final round of 63 to win the individual title at the LIV Golf Mayakoba and also lead Crushers GC to the team prize as the new LIV Golf season got under way.

Howell’s bogey-free 8-under 63 was the lowest score of any player all week, and his first eight holes were even more impressive, as he produced six birdies to overtake 36-hole co-leaders Peter Uihlein and Talor Gooch. He eventually finished at 16 under, four strokes better than Uihlein, who shot a 68. Branden Grace was third at 10 under after shooting 67.

It’s Howell’s fourth worldwide victory of his career, and his first at El Camaleon, a course he first competed on in 2007.

“Obviously, I don’t think you ever see a win coming,” said the 43-year-old Howell. “I’ve played in a lot of golf tournaments in my life, and I haven’t won a lot of them, and you have the doubts and the feelings, will you ever win again?

“To do it against this competition with these guys standing up here is more than I could ever dream of. I’m extremely thankful.”

Player Profile

Howell was born in Augusta on June 20, 1979. In 2000 he was a member of Oklahoma State University winning team and the individual winner at the NCAA Championship. Later that year he turned professional and was named PGA Tour rookie of the year in 2001. His first victory came at the Michelob Championship in October 2002. Five years later he won the Nissan Open and in 2018 he claimed the RSM Classic. Despite winning just three PGA Tour titles, Howell earned more than $40m in prize money and never one lost his tour card until he defected to LIV Golf in 2022. He twice qualified to play for the USA at the Presidents Cup.
