How Good is Muirfield - Golfers Describe The Course

By: | Tue 02 Aug 2022

Home of The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers, Muirfield is considered by many an astute mind to be the finest of Scotland's championship links courses; an impressive standing that will surely only be enhanced by the 2022 AIG Women's Open.

But, despite the quality of that formidable layout where legendary champions have triumphed, the historic club itself has often been tainted by controversy, a reputation that is now in the process of recovery following the long-awaited introduction of female members, a move that opened the door for the year's final major to be held in East Lothian.

Everyday golfers themselves - as evidenced by old reviews submitted into the Golfshake Course Section - haven't always felt particularly welcome at Muirfield, but that is now changing, as more recent ratings have been simply glowing.

What has never been in dispute is the outstanding links itself, and we now defer to members of the Golfshake Community who have reviewed the venue and described the brilliant design of this renowned course.

Golfers Describe Muirfield

"It is the complete package. The setting, the welcome received, to the facilities, the course and a meal afterwards in the clubhouse and a drink on the terrace. Pure class and a chance to play where greats of the game have played."

"Played the course on a great day in Dec 2016 (yes, December in Scotland!). Course condition was great. Greens were impeccable. I've seen and heard the bad press, but the hospitality we received was also excellent. A complete golfing day out."

"The best course in Scotland in my opinion and played on a beautiful day."

"This is by a country mile the best course in the British Isles and in the top five in the world."

"Hard but fair, with the best opening and finishing holes in golf."

"Open past winners say it all about the hallowed turf, Vardon, Braid, Hagen, Cotton, Player, Nicklaus, Trevino, Watson, Faldo and Els. This list is a who's who of our great game."

"Immaculately presented, fair but very challenging course with a warm welcome."

"A wonderful, fair golf course in superb condition which, played off the back tees, is a tremendous test. Some wonderful views of the Forth. The atmosphere is firmly traditional but very welcoming and friendly."

"Fair, immense off the back, superb condition, wonderful clubhouse, friendly welcome."

"Open Championship venue. Great layout. Great test of golf."

"Playing an iconic course is always a pleasure, on a fair weather day on the East Coast of Scotland it's even better."
