The Best Fairway Woods of 2021

By: Golfshake Editor | Tue 18 May 2021

Fairway woods are an essential part of anyone's bag, with that status being reflected in the depth of quality that has been presented by the leading brands this year.

Following his chosen Best Drivers of 2021, Golfshake Equipment Expert, Ryan Rastall is BACK with a selection of new fairway woods for this season, which should offer something for any golfer who is seeking to gain that edge on the course.

Showcasing Ryan's comments with detail behind each club, meet the Best Fairway Woods of 2021!

Callaway EPIC Speed

Callaway EPIC Speed

The Callaway Epic Speed Fairway was designed to improve on: speed, distance and alignment – so pretty much everything. The New Jailbreak A.I. Velocity Blades help the Jailbreak technology to stiffen the body of the club. Moreover, the new design enables the wood’s Forged Face Cup to flex more – which results in exceptional ball speeds coming from anywhere across the face. The Forward Centre of Gravity is combined with a new leading-edge, which helps to encourage better ball flights, superb spin robustness and, perhaps most importantly, consistent shot shape dispersion. The high strength C300 Maraging Steel provides unrivalled strength and further flexibility. If you’re struggling to get your wood launching from the ground, then the Epic Speed Fairway will assist with off-centre strikes.

Specs:

  • A.I. Designed Flash Face SS21
  • Available in 3+, 3, 4, 5 and 7 wood

What Golfshake Say:

“A slightly smaller looking head but with a deeper face. It’s more aimed at the player who wants that penetrating ball flight and perhaps a slightly higher club head speed player as well.”

TaylorMade SIM2 Max

TaylorMade SIM MAX2

When the TaylorMade SIM 2 Max Fairway Wood was designed, they wanted to implement a little more forgiveness without sacrificing its impressive distance. The reintroduction of V Steel, and combining that with SIM, has resulted in the lowest CG of any fairway wood that TaylorMade have ever released. Multi-material construction and rethought weight distribution helps deliver explosive distance, higher launch and lower spin. Furthermore, improved weight distribution results in pinpoint CG projection, which will benefit the golfer who struggles to launch their woods. A larger 190cc head has been introduced, allowing further forgiveness for shots struck away from the centre. Finally, the incredibly-strong C300 Steel Face delivers powerful ball flights and, when paired with Twist Face, corrective curvature that results in straighter shots, better distance and increased accuracy.

Specs:

  • Model – 3, 3HL, 5, 7, 9
  • Loft – 15, 16.5, 18, 21, 24

What Golfshake Say:

“The 3HL option – that was missing last year – has been reintroduced for this season. So, those of you who need that little bit more loft or a bit more help, there is a fairway wood for you.”

PING G425 Max

PING G425 MAX

The PING G425 Driver saw the manufacturer release their highest-MOI driver that drastically improves forgiveness. When they designed the G425 Max Fairway Wood, they wanted the theme of forgiveness to remain. Two PING innovations, Facewrap and Spinsistency, feature heavily throughout the collection to deliver more distance and spin predictability for carrying hazards and hitting greens. Additionally, a new 3-dot aligned feature provides golfers with correct club position at address. A high-density tungsten sole weight has been strategically positioned to increase the MOI, resulting in further forgiveness. PING’s Trajectory Tuning 2.0 utilises a lightweight, aerodynamic hosel sleeve that presents eight different positions for customisation that should see both distance and accuracy drastically improve. With the G425 Max Fairway Wood available in several models, Ping could dominate the fairway market this year.

Specs:

  • Model – 3, 5, 7, 9
  • Loft – 14.5, 17.5, 20.5, 23.5

What Golfshake Say:

“I think the Max will suit the widest array of golfer out there. It has multiple loft editions available and will help to get the ball in the air for longer sustained periods.”

Cobra Radspeed

Cobra Radspeed

The Cobra Radspeed Fairway has been designed with forgiveness as the theme. It features a traditional shape with a balance of both front and back weights to help produce low spin with a high launch for maximum distance. By increasing the weights in the front and the back of the club, they’re created the optimal combination of low spin yet faster ball speeds whilst maintaining that barrier of forgiveness. The CNC Milled Infinity Face design increases the middled area by 95%, which will assist with continuously higher ball speeds. The Hollow Split Rails also focus on speed but has been primarily designed to offer an improved launch angle. A new carbon material called Thin-Ply Carbon Crown has also been introduced, which is 30% thinner and 4 grams lighter than previous models, resulting in further reduced spin.

Specs:

  • Models – 3, 5, 7
  • Loft – 13, 17, 21

What Golfshake Say:

“If you hit the club towards the bottom of the face, you’re still going to get very good ball speed. Aimed at the player who doesn’t always hit the middle of the face all the time but, to be honest, it’s going to suit the mass market of golfers.”
