FootJoy Tour X Golf Shoe Review
REVIEW: FootJoy Tour X Golf Shoe
Review by Golfshake's Kevin Paver
FootJoy has brought together the best of three acclaimed models to complete the new Tour X golf shoe, which has been designed to deliver tour level innovation and performance.
With input from the best golfers in the world, Tour X incorporates the best qualities of Tour-S, DNA and Fury and amplifies them with the latest performance technologies and materials to achieve the most feature-rich performance shoe in FJ’s history.
Richard Fryer, Director of Footwear Product Management, said: “Feedback from tour and consumers told us that they loved the unmatched stability from the PowerPlate outsole and PowerStrap of Tour-S but craved soft supple leather they experienced in DNA and the underfoot comfort in Fury. So, we combined all three and turbo-charged it with the latest technology to create the ultimate hybrid performance shoe. And Tour X was born.”
Having been a big fan of FootJoy for many years, I was excited to head onto the course to test the new Tour X, and see how they performed in a range of conditions during winter in the UK.
Looks
FootJoy have certainly moved towards a more classic styling with the Tour X, which I really like. They are similar in style to the Tour-S; that classic performance styling with a very clean design. I tested the white/navy version, which also has flashes of lime running through the design, but these are incredibly subtle.
But it’s not just the upper that impresses. I also like the way the outsole looks, subtly athletic detailing that instills you with confidence in the stability that you're about to present to your feet.
Also, worth noting the outsole design. Now, I know this is probably one of the least important considerations given it will be facing the floor for most of its life, but I just wanted to discuss as I really liked it! The combination of lime green and clear spikes on the blue outsole with the very bold Tour X graphic was particularly striking.
Feel
They are SUPER Comfortable! That’s the initial feeling you get as you put the Tour X on for the first time. You don’t really expect a shoe with so much focus on performance to be that comfortable, but I guess that’s what FootJoy set out to achieve.
The Ortholite ImpressionsFitBed that we saw in last year’s Fury does a super job to deliver the ultimate comfort, which combined with the 3d molded collar in the heel and stretch tongue will leave you not wanting to take these off. I could easily see these performing for a 36-hole day with ease - that’s a huge plus in my book.
Performance
Ok, let’s get to the important stuff. Designing shoes that deliver exceptional on course performance is really where FootJoy excel, and they have not disappointed with the Tour X. The new TPU PowerPlate outsole gives you an incredibly solid base to enable you to swing the golf club, and I tested this is some pretty grim Yorkshire conditions.
Helping you to generate that traction, are nine launch pods (or soft spike to you and me!). These are positioned strategically around the outsole to deliver some impressive stability and when coupled with the newly added PowerStrap across the mid foot you really feel like you can go after those big shots.
Should you find yourself playing in the rain (which is highly likely if you are in the UK), the Tour X also comes with a one-year waterproof guarantee.
Pros
A serious performance golf shoe that delivers by the bucketload. With this kind of performance, you often see a compromise in the level of comfort. But with the Tour X, this is simply not the case. It also has a 12-month waterproof guarantee.
Cons
The RRP of £179 (UK) may put some people off, but you are getting a super high performing golf shoe. It’s also worth noting this is significantly cheaper than the price of the Tour-S at the time of release.
The Bottom Line
The Tour X is a brilliant golf shoe. FootJoy set out to take the best bits of three previous shoes and deliver the ultimate “X” factor. If you are looking for super performance, with incredible comfort, then you won’t go far wrong with the Tour X.
I think FootJoy have really created something special in the Tour X, in fact, they might just have created the perfect golf shoe.
