Discover the New South Course at Monte Rei

By: Golfshake Editor | Thu 17 Oct 2019

The North Course at Monte Rei is widely regarded as being among the finest in Portugal - if not Continental Europe - and is a favourite of Golfshake's Kevin Paver. But in news that should excite any regular visitor to the Algarve, this acclaimed layout is set to be joined by the Jack Nicklaus designed South Course, which is expected to open for play in 2022.

Establishing Monte Rei as being the only venue in Europe with two Jack Nicklaus Signature Courses, this development will make an already revered destination even more popular. "We had always planned to have two Nicklaus Signature Courses at Monte Rei, so it is very good news that this is now underway," said Carlos Lopez, Monte Rei board member. "Anyone who has played our existing Jack Nicklaus-designed course will understand the time and effort we put into our facility. We provide an exceptional golf experience and the second course will be designed and built to the same world class standard."

Jack Nicklaus said: "We are fortunate that the North Course has received tremendous acclaim in the region and throughout the world, and we are very proud of what we accomplished. Now we have the opportunity, and challenge, to create a second golf course at Monte Rei, which will not only complement the spectacular North Course, but will also meet the high standards the development team has established.

"The South Course will have many similar features, great trees, wonderful topography, beautiful vistas, and has the potential to be another sensational course. Our mission will be to maximise the existing terrain and natural features, so we can create a golf experience that has its own distinct personality, with the same commitment to excellence that golfers expect when they visit Monte Rei."

Ground was broken in June, meaning the process has officially begun, which made for perfect timing when our very own Kevin stopped by for a chat. Director of Agronomy, João Goulão kindly showed us around the new site, and discussed the recent changes Jack Nicklaus made on his own recent visit, underlining the hands-on approach that the legendary Golden Bear is adopting with this new project.

Talking with João, Kevin had the chance to gain some insight behind the process of golf course construction from the first stage. Gazing across the landscape, it may be difficult to properly visualise this new design, but should it come anywhere near the quality of the North Course, then Monte Rei is destined to become a truly special destination.
