Could Brexit Prove Beneficial to UK Golf Resorts?

By: Golfshake Editor | Mon 10 Dec 2018

Article by David Moon, Golf Manager at St Mellion International Resort

Brexit is a hugely contentious and uncertain topic, but like all industries, those in golf have been assessing the potential impact that the United Kingdom leaving the European Union could have on them. David Moon, the Golf Manager at St Mellion International Resort, has written this article reflecting on what he perceives may be a gain for resorts like his.

Additionally, Golfshake's Derek Clements recently asked What Could Brexit Mean for Golf in the UK?

As of today (Monday 10th December 2018), none of us know what the eventual Brexit terms will be. The MPs are still debating it, so all we can do is think about the bigger picture.

In the short term at least, I’m predicting that the Brexit effect should be a ‘plus’ for UK golf resorts and golf hotels.

I’ve had many Brexit conversations with customers at St Mellion this year, and let me tell you – it’s making people more cautious about travelling abroad.

This will result in at least a short-term gain for St Mellion, and other UK golf destinations like ourselves.

And this isn’t just my opinion – it is based on hard evidence. Right now we are significantly ahead in 2019, as regards forwards group bookings, versus where we were exactly twelve months ago. We have had many conversations this year where golfers tell us they are looking for a UK golf holiday for the first time in a while.

I think this illustrates that, at the moment, golf groups who were previously thinking of going to Spain or Portugal, Turkey etc believe that there may be better value by staying on these shores. To what degree this has been affected by the Brexit debate it is impossible to say, but I believe that in 2019 at least, if there’s still uncertainty as to what Brexit means for all of us then it’s logical to say that UK golf resorts will benefit – at least, until golfers are once again confident about getting the right amount of value out of a European golf holiday.

Let’s not forget, if the weather is good there is no better place to play your golf than right here in the UK!

Not only do many UK golf resorts like St Mellion deliver superb value for money, but we also have some of Europe’s top golf courses right here in the UK. Here at St Mellion we build our golf breaks around Jack Nicklaus’s first golf course in the UK, and also around our other course – the Kernow – which is also a former European Tour venue. So we know that you don’t have to cross the Channel if you’re looking for a week’s worth of golf and a fabulous hotel along with it.

And we are certainly not alone in knowing how to create a memorable golf holiday for British-based golfers. We tend to be ranked quite highly in the lists of the UK’s Top 100 golf resorts, and that’s always great to see, but a glance at lists like that will remind all golfers of how much superlative choice they have right here in their homeland, from a host of other superb UK golf resorts – with no need to worry about the implications of Brexit!

So let’s wave the flag for UK-based golfing holidays: let the politicians do their jobs, and we’ll do ours.
