The Best Value For Money Golf Course in England
If you want to play one of the best golf courses in the UK & Ireland, the chances are that you will be required to pay a green fee that could be viewed as gratuitously high.
Now, we appreciate the principle of supply and demand alongside what the market dictates, but can anyone realistically justify spending £300 on a round of golf?
That's why at Golfshake we champion those venues that remain affordable to all golfers, as you can see in our recent feature The Best Golf Courses You Can Play Under £50, but there is no doubt that quality should be appreciated also, and we love playing an outstanding, internationally renowned layout as much as anyone.
You may or may not have heard of Silloth on Solway Golf Club - but we believe that it might just offer the perfect marriage of affordability and calibre.
Located on a striking piece of land that rests alongside the Solway Firth, you can gaze across towards the Scottish Borders from this jewel of Cumbrian golf, one of the finest links courses to be found in the North of England.
You therefore won't be surprised to hear that Silloth is Highly Recommended on Golfshake, with an extraordinarily high rating of 4.96, which is based on the reviews submitted by the everyday golfers who make up our passionate Community.
Consequently, Silloth is 23rd in the Golfshake Top 100, but don't just take our word for it. Taking a quick glance online, you'll see that it rates 51st and 50th for GB&I in Golf Monthly and National Club Golfer respectively. It's 20th for England in Golf World, and Top 100 Golf Courses have placed Silloth at 18th in England.
And you could experience it yourself - for just £95 in the summer months or £55 during winter.
That's clearly not exactly a "cheap" green fee, but something this good should cost a little bit more. However, when compared to most other celebrated destinations across these islands, the value for money offered by Silloth remains incredibly attractive and makes it a place that, for a treat, all golfers should have on their list to discover for themselves.
If you want a little more inspiration, when Golfshake Ambassador Rob Cross played here in 2019, he wrote: "A standard good golf course would have three or four standout holes. Silloth on Solway has 18. I genuinely cannot think of a hole that isn’t brilliant. I spent my time walking around the course, looking around, smiling, and feeling that I would like to play here every day. The layout is shaped naturally, I loved being below the fairways on some holes, yet being above the whole course on others."
When author Kevin Markham, who has played every golf course in Ireland, visited here, he said: "The designers of Silloth on Solway left quite the legacy but, in terms of shaping the course, Mother Nature had the greatest say. Once the direction of the holes had been established the landscape took over because the roll of the land is nothing short of mesmerising. The unexpected humps and hollows, the natural green complexes that mould with the land, the bucking fairways - it all adds up to links heaven."
Recently, we surveyed over 700 keen golfers to ask them to name the best course they had played last year. Receiving seven nominations, Silloth was the most popular recommendation. That's how good this place is.
On their website, Silloth themselves state: "Our superb golf course is a perfect visitor destination, a top quality golf course that is a challenge for all standards of golfers with a price tag that won’t break the bank."
And that is not an inaccurate or exaggerated comment. This is one of England's finest links courses and it can be played for an achievable rate that makes it arguably the most accessible of the truly great tracks in Britain.
Could it be the best value for money golf course in England? It's not the cheapest, and nor should it be, but for £95 in the peak months of the season, these days, for a layout of this undisputed stature, it quite simply doesn't get better than that.
