Card Index

Posted by: user440021 | Thu 15th Dec 2011 05:18 | Last Reply

I would like to know if anyone can help me on how a hole index is calculated, So far I have recorded 80 A grade scores which has given me how many strokes on each hole and a average for each hole.

Is there a calculation to work out what the index on each hole should be,

Hoping someone can help.

Regards,

Simon Hughes

I always thought that when cards are returned to the sec then the strokes over par are calculated and si is adjusted periodically if req. IE a par 5 playing at av 5.5 strokes would be a higher si than a par 4 playing at av 4.6 shots. This is my belief.

It's not a precise art.  Clubs look at the difficulty of the holes over a period of time based on competition returns but also then factor in other matters such as where shots would fall for matchplay competitions.

Stroke index used to be based on how a scratch player would play the course, i.e. each hole was rated by its difficulty. However, that changed several years back to take into account balancing the stroke indexes between each nine and to place the most difficult holes mid round. Typically, the odd numbered indexes are on the back nine and the low index holes will not be in the first couple or last couple of holes.

Simon,

Here in the UK we use a different handicap system to you in Australia although the Hole S.I. allocation should be very similar to the CONGU system here.

But in both places, the S.I. should only be used to see where you get any shots and not what you should score on that hole. If you look at figures from a number of players, you will see why I say this.

A Cat 1 player may make a Par on the S.I. 1 hole more times than say the S.I. 4 hole and not birdie the S.I 18 hole as many times as the S.I. 14 hole. This doesn't mean that he needs to change anything because at the end of the day, it is the TOTAL number of shots played that is the target.

Simon,

Just to give you some idea about my last post.

I played 52 competitive rounds at Filey GC while a member there and it's S.I.'s were 'old school' (as Brian said) and the 18th was in fact SI 4.

My Hole records were:-

BEST

-0.62 on SI 16,     -0.50 on SI 7,     -0.31 on SI 18,     -0.21 on SI 10,  &  -0.08 on SI 15.

WORST

+ 0.46 on SI 2,     +0.44 on SI 11,     +0.38 on SI 1,     +0.35 on SI 13,     &  +0.25 on SI 12

So you see, the S.I. doesn't show how you play a course in relation to your score.
