A guy in Seamer, nr Scarborough built three golf holes in a paddock behind his house. Scarborough Council found out and demanded 'Planning Permission' was obtained or take it away. The guy argued, "do I need planning permission to cut my grass at different heights?" The answer, Yes!
He got retrospective permission though.
