Golf society rules

Posted by: user326345 | Thu 30th Jun 2011 22:57 | Last Reply

Hello guys, been a while since i have posted (I have been lurking alot)

In the golf society i'm a member of, a member of my team has been suspended regarding claims that he had been cheating and lying about his handicap as he plays at a private golf club. The society has given him a handicap of 19 while he plays off 18 at the private club. They have suspended him before they even asked everybody whether we are a member of a golf club and have a different handicap to the one given. They have handled the situation inappropiately.

My question is, should being a member of a golf club matters in a golf society where we often play different courses every month?

He has a disciplinary meeting AFTER our next league match, i have already sent a long letter stating that he has not been cheating because in every match so far, he has played worse than his handicap level so he hasn't had any advantage whatsoever. As well they never asked us to clarify on any issues before suspending him.  Anyway, is he allowed to have a companion in the disciplinary meeting? As alot of companies allows that nowdays but i don't know whether it is different for societies?

Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks!

Societies make their own rules and all members should have access to those rules. I would think it essential to disclose your club handicap to the society and, very often, the society will adjust your handicap downwards according to the society rules and your performance in events. It would be very unusual for a player to play in a society with a handicap higher than his club handicap.

As to the disciplinary hearing, the society rules will be the crucial factor - could be a witch-hunt if there is no clear society rule on the issue.

Disciplinary hearing? don't make it so formal, select a few people (could be the handicap committee) and give him a good kicking. How many shots he gained = kicks to the head. If, and only if, he persists then the hanging should commence.

Jamie, all joking aside,. If it is the case and he received an 18 hcap from your Soc (and I assume that was after a competition) and there's only one in it then it's much ado about nothing: if he had a club hcap of 15 then he has questions to answer. Soc rules do vary and the way the hcap committee calculates hcaps vary. I think it's perfectly proper to have a club hcap different to a soc one. My regular playing partner only feels comfortable on one course, he knows the gradients, distances etc. and can play wel but take him to a different course (and I think most of us play in societies to go to play different courses at hefty discount prices) and he's a fish out of water.

I would say yes, he has every right to have someone else with him for support. I suspect, however, that the society will make up their rules as the situation develops.

Jamie

2 things

1 It sounds like a bit of a serious society as societies are supposed to be a light hearted game witha bit of competition. I play off 17 and my society hcap is 10, so its swings and roundabouts.

2. Why didnt your pal say he played off 18 when he was given 19 as a hcap if its a bit serious?

Hope it gets sorted ( what sort of prises do you award )

Sounds like a load of nonsense to me. If i was the guy i would tell them where to go and walk away. Suspension, disciplinary , jesus what are the going to do, take his clubs away.

I run a society for fun, we have fantastic days and everyone has lots of banter and thoughly enjoy their golf. I also run The York and District Golf League which is in full swing now. The handicaps range from scratch to 28 and we all get along fantastic. I am not the best golfer in the world and my golfshake handicap is 28, but my league handicap is 24 so again this can work both ways.

Christ, lighten up abit and enjoy what is a fantastic sport if it played in the right context.

p.s. if the guy who is facing the firing squad wants to move societies pass him my details.

Societies that don't use CSS and the CONGU system to work out Hcp's can't expect its members who are in Golf Clubs to have the same Hcp in both Society and Club.
