Golf apps
I dont want to go into the shoulds/shouldn'ts of using GPS systems & phones on the golf course, but has anyone tried any of the iPhone apps to use as GPS systems?
I used a free app called 'Free Golf GPS Range Finder' on Monday and it did a great job. Gave the overview from Google maps then with the GPS gave me the yardage to the middle, front and back of the green. Certainly worth giving a go.
Theres also a fair few paid apps out there. Has anyone tried these? If so would you have any further recommendations?

I use Golfshot GPS. I love it. It acts as a scorecard as well, and tracks all stats to give you graphs on performance. Also, if you download another app called GolfPlan, they link so that your stats are used to give you tutorials from Paul Azinger on how to improve.

I use Intelligolf which has been around for a few years. However they are still writing their conversions for iPhone, Android and Windows Mobile 7.
I use a Nokia N95 8GB (any S60 Nokia will work with this software along with a selection of other phones)
I tried using my wifes touch screen phone and I find the keypad on the Nokia far easier as you can key in scores, putt distances etc in one hand whilst pulling a trolley with the other whilst walking between green and tee.
It also has a Web interface which allows you to mark your own points on the course prior to playing using google maps. I find this pre round review a very good tool for plotting your way around a course prior to playing for the first time.

I looked at Golfshot and wondered whether it was worth £18 (unless I get crafty and jailbreak my phone) I am a fan of stats though, so very tempting!!

I'm of the same mind set Stuart, round a familiar course the GPS wouldn't be used, but I'm playing a lot of new courses, so will use it more for that. no good playing soley of a yardage figure when you have a 2/3 club wind swirling

@ Dave
Swirling wind which might mean 2 clubs more, fair enough you are not going to play the club you would normally play but 2 clubs more tha the club for the distance so it still gives you that starting point.
I agree I use mine less for judging distance on the home course and more fro tracking the round but it is still good to get that check on the points on the course where you always get the distance wrong.

Dave, I've been using golfshot gps for the last few weeks now and it's so much more than just a distance reader. I knew my driving was letting me down, but when you actually analyse it after a round it puts things into perspective, and like Stuart says link it to golfplan and Paul Azinger gives you all kinds of practise drills to correct your problems.
