GPS Range finders

Posted by: user331868 | Sun 22nd May 2011 17:44 | Last Reply

I'm thinking of buying a range finder, the one i like is the golf buddy tour, has anyone got this range finder and if so would they recommend it. It sounds great and the price has come down from £289 to £199. Any info would be much appreciated.

These are excellent and much cheaper than the opposition.

That callaway upro looks fantastic. Have you used one John? I use a sureshot GPS and swear by it. I just paid lifetime subscription for £30 and I have memory for 40 courses.

Dennis,

Your i-phone is ok to use in general play but there banned from being used in competition play in the R&A rules.

How many courses dose it cover in the UK, i read somewhere that 16,000 out of the 20,000 courses preloaded are in the states, and the other 4,000 are across the rest of the world, dose it cover enough courses in the UK to make it worth getting and can you download more courses as  and when they've been mapped.  thanks....

I have just looked at the golfbuddy course library, and i couldnt find any courses i play, and i generaly play at least 15 different courses a year, mostly in Essex but i do play some in Kent & Surrey too, surley i should find some courses that i play, this is getting very confussing as soon as i find a GPS  i like something puts me off.

I dont want to sway you in any way but the few concerns that have come up on other gps gizmos has not been an isue for my sureshot.

1. Its over 2 years old now and a full battery will last a full round and about 9 holes of another if ive not charged it. I charge it overnight before I play. Not sure if it would bo 36 holes in 1 day.

2. I play all over Sussex, Surrey, Kent and a few further adrift and have only come across 1 course not on their data base. ( waterhall in brighton ) I requested this to be set up, so I will see how long it takes.

3. I paid a £29.99 life subscription and I can have a database of 40 courses on my gps at any time. If I want a new one then all I do is delete one and add another. No further cost.

4. I have never witnessed the signal fail. It will turn off after about 15 mins of inactivity. Turn back on and 1 min later its up and running.

I havn't tried any other gps but I am very pleased with mine.

Geordie Dave

I have just checked out the course library for the Sureshot 800, and they have 113 courses just in Essex, including all the courses i play. Also Amazon are selling them for £130 which is a great price and with life time membership only £29.99 making it £160.00 its still one of the cheapest.

thanks Dave, I'm going to check out a few more gps but the sureshot  has gone to no-1 at the moment.

I went to the golfbuddy official course library where you can put in the name of a golf course and if its been mapped it will appear. I put in 20 golf courses that i play and not one came up, and one of them courses is a very respected golf course where they held the qualifying for last years Open. Just in case i might have done something wrong i put in a golf course that i have played in Kent, that i knew was on there library, and hey presto it came up, it seems to me that they have not yet mapped any/many golf courses in Essex, which seems strange as it is the second biggest county in England with a wealth of golf courses to choose from, where the gps Sureshot had well over 100 courses in Essex alone and all the courses which i have played, the golf buddy sounds like a fantastic device as it acts more like a sat nav, where it knows exactly where you are without having to enter the course your playing, but its no good to me if it hasn't got the golf courses i play, and as i said i have played a lot of different ones especially in Essex.

As i said i searched on the golfbuddy course library and couldn't find any of the courses i play in Essex, here are a few i play, Abridge / Romford / Hobbs Cross / Top Meadow / South Essex / Canons Brook.

I hope you have better luck than i did.

When i checked the course library of the Sureshot GPS it had every single course i have played in Essex, and many more i would like to play in future, so having looked at the golf buddy / the Callaway Upro / the Sky Caddie and the Sureshot, and they all have there strong points, and looked at many reviews on all of them, i have taken Geordie Daves advice and ordered the Sureshot yesterday from Amazon for £129.99. Many thanks for your input Graham and everyone else who has replied, its much appreciated and please let me know how you get on with those courses.

I have just had another look on the golfbuddy course library and have found out what i did wrong or what they did wrong. When you have to enter what state your in, i clicked on South East because i live in Romford, Essex and that is in the South East, how ever they have it under East of England, so when i searched for my courses under East of England they all started to appear, i think golfbuddy should take some geography lessons or do what Sureshot course library do and that's by County. I wonder how many people that live in Essex have thought of buying a golfbuddy and looked at their course library and had the same problem as me and just decided to buy another GPS.
