New Driver

Posted by: user21179 | Mon 2nd May 2011 22:50 | Last Reply

After reading everyones thoughts about clubs and in particular shafts, i am starting to think that i need to do more than simply choose between TM R11 or Titliest 910.

Over the past 5 years i have had the R5 and currently the R7. Both with reg shafts and 10.5 loft.

I have tried others in the net at Am Golf but always felt the most comfortable with this set up.

Without spending the earth on custom fitting is there anything i can do to determine the best shaft for my swing ?

I know this is a common thread but any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Tim, you did not get down to your current handicap by driving poorly. Progression to an even lower handicap will not be met with a new driver but by a big improvement in your short game.

Very true John. However something has come loose inside the head of my r7, and while this doesnt seem to affect the club it does get on my nerves during my back swing.

Not a good enough excuse to spend a fortune on a new club, Tim. If you really are that desperate, then I hav e an r7 reg 10.5 which you can have for £30 without a rattle.

Hi John, if it is the superquad version then i will definately take you up on the offer as i do get on well with the one i have.

Tim.

Not the superquad, Tim,  just a common r7. I have a very nice Ping G10 but with the soft reg shaft, needs a slower swing.

I have a fairly short compact backswing for my height 6.2 but a longer follow through. My club head speed is around 98/99 mph with reg shaft.

You have made me think even more about the merits of a new driver as opposed to short game lessons and more time invested on the practise ground. After all i could easily have the rattle removed by the pro !

Now you are talking sense, Tim.

I guess that all this talk about shafts has just made me worry that i am perhaps using the wrong one !

Thats how this game gets inside my head.

When i mentioned the idea of a new driver to one of my playing partners today he said that i must be mad to consider changing it.

I have never had a problem off the tee and my driver is more of a go to club than my 3 wood !

coming round to the idea that shiney new hardwear will only benefit the manufacturers bank balance and not my game !

Hi Sanders

what would the cost be of a fitting (area permitting) with you if it were possible ?

Tim, as good a club  builder as he is and the undoubted quality you would get from Ivan, I feel that to reduce your handicap, the answer lies in the other end of the game to the driver.

I only play weekdays but you are most welcome to come and play at my club anytime you feel like it..
