Some advice please.
Hi there,
Hoping for some advice on some new irons. (I'm sure this post has been covered a thousand times but please stick with me).
I'm currently using some John Letters T9 irons that ive had for about 4 years since starting playing but now that i'm down to 8hcp i'm thinking should i change them? I know there not a callaway/ping etc but i hit them pretty well.
I have the chance to get hold of some Taylor Made R9 TP irons for a decent price but i'm not sure if its a step too far too soon?
Any advice or recomendations would be great.
Matthew

Why do you have to change irons as you improve. it's not compulsory to graduate to blades when you get to scratch. K J Choi plays with ping G15 irons which are for high handicappers. If you play well with your irons keep them. If you get some more irons you might find you take 6 months to get used to them.

I agree with the comment don't change for the sake of it but then again I have just bought a new set after 5 years even though I was hitting my old ones better than I have ever done before. It must be the magpie in me wanting the shiny things http://www.golfshake.com/scripts/ckeditor/plugins/smiley/images/regular_smile.gif" title="smiley" width="20" />
Regarding thre R9s, I had a try with them (as I did with a number of sets) and felt they were a good solid iron as you would expect from TM. Where they for me ? No. Are they right for you ? Who knows, you have to try them.
If you have set your heart on buying new irons then nothing said on here will change that, but I would personally caution you on buying just on the basis of price. You have to try as many clubs as you can lay your hands on, compare cast irons against forged ones, look at they whole cost spectrum. The key point is try them out or you may wind up with comparitively expensive spare set.

If the Ping I15s were good and you instantly could tell the difference, buy the Ping i15. Better than the TM in my opinion, I have tried both. Oh and I now own Ping I15s and love them!!!!

Like you matthew I usually change my irons every four or five years when they're starting to get a bit tired. I agree with James and would try several brands including a few forged set's as for feel they are hard to beat. It's also a good idea to get fitted for the right shaft/lie angle etc to get the best from a new set rather than just buy because they were a good price. I changed from cast mizuno mx17's to forged mx 200's(both custom fitted) 18 months ago and it was a really good move. The difference in feel is like night and day and the strike is much cleaner with them. Good luck and enjoy!

Hi Mathew i have to agree with david that forged irons have been a great choice for me.
I went from cobra 2400hxi to cobra forged about a year ago. As david says, the feel off the face at impact is so different.
I went for cobras due to the higher flight i can achieve with them. Not so easy to shape shots but consistent trajectory helps yardage measurement.
Try a few sets as everyone has said, but dont make your judgement solely on discounts or perceived value for money. If you are not completely comfortable at address over the next 5/6 years you will regret spending anything at all.
Also remember that the Tms will only help your bad swings not your good ones. They may give your more confidence which helps massively but a sound repetitive swing with any Iron is what we all need to strive for.
