Golf Clubs

Posted by: user359843 | Thu 24th Feb 2011 19:52 | Last Reply

I know that its about the golfer and not the equipment but...
How different would it be playing with some 30 year old Ping Karsten III irons and some new game improvement clubs?

I have only owner one set of clubs, the above named pings, and when I hit them well, they fly.  But there is no forgiveness whatsoever with them, the clubs let you know you have hit a bad shot by biting your hand off and sending the ball in the completely wrong direction than that intended for about 10yards.

Now I know if I was a pro I could hit any clubs, but I am not.  I see some of my mates with a much worse swing than me but some gucci clubs and even with what would be a terrible shot for me, they seem to get some distance and relative distance.

It may all be mental, I am still fairly new and I am having lessons, but I just wanted to know if there is a significant difference.

John - Are you sure their swing is worse? From what I have picked up so far - within reason, it's not the clubs - it's the player.  A good player can hit anything, but gucci clubs will not make things better for a novice. Andy

I am not saying their swing is consistently worse, there is a reason why my handicap is so high, but they can toe it or heel it and get away with it whereas if you do that with my Irons your lucky if the ball goes in-front of you.

There must be a reason as to why manufacturers spend so much money and effort on iron technology.  My Irons are as old as wooden 'woods'.

The two different model TaylorMade burners that they play with are 'game improvement' irons, from what I have read they are more forgiving?  I was just wondering if this was the case.  Some reviews I have read, high handicappers seem to rave about their Game Improvement and Super Game Improvement irons.  I was just after some honest opinions as to whether these are worth the money.

John, why not ask one of your mates to lend you their "forgiving clubs" for a round. Then you will see what if any advantage or disadvantage they have. I would think you will lose about 10-15yds on each club but will hit 20-30% less duff shots.
