Join a club in E/W Sussex

Looking at joining Hollingbury Park nr Brighton. They have a good deal at less than £48 a month 7 day member. Have played 1/2 dozen times recently and it really holds up well in the wet weather. Does get a bit windy up there but a lot of good holes. Is anyone currently a member here or does anyone know of any similar deals whithin about 20 miles of crawley. Any views would be apprieciated.

Wildwood at Alfold is only £890 for 7 day membership payable nonthly and a great club. I used to travel from South London to play there.

Im a member of the phoenix course at cottesmore,  although its not the greatest course its a good practice track, and you get the benefits of a crown course, and 40% discount around the crown network, i pay £39 a month

John, Wildwood is a good course. Have played there a few times. Can be a bit boggy in the wet. Looking for something a tad cheaper. Paul, have played pheonix loads of times looking for a longer course and its not the best nick in the winter but i still play there now and again.I See you play a lot of the same courses as me.

Still looks good value down at hollingbury!

Hollingbury is a good deal, but a bit too far for the evening 9 holes, or the early morning round for me, we are very lucky in this area that  a lot of courses do good internet offers, so Cottesmore is cheap enough that I don't mind paying to go else where more often.

Youre dead right paul but unfortunatly I only get to play weekend as I have a couple of kids I pick up after work. I used to be a member at tilgate before the kids were born and I played a couple of rounds after work and a couple of rounds at the w/e. Lovely course in the summer but not so good in the winter.

Have you had a look at Hassocks. They have a good silver membership which gives full member benefits but you pay as you play at a reduced green fee rate. Its a good course too. I was a member there when I lived in Sussex

Hi David

There is a big difference in the quality of the courses already mentioned which is reflected in the membership subs.

I wont do a course by course review, but all i will say is that apart from Hollingbury all the others do suffer very badly in the winter.

I live in Brighton but havent played Hollingbury for several years so i am by no means its biggest fan; there are far better courses locally which can also be played all year.

The biggest factor is cost. You do get what you pay for most of the time with memberships.

If you can streatch a bit further, look into the courses on the Sussex / Surrey borders.

Tim, you are dead right you get what you pay for. My problem is that I will only be able to play most weekends so dont want to pay £1000 for 30-40 rounds when I could just pay & play £20 a tee time as I do at the moment. I would like the experience of proper competition not just a knock around and the monthly society. I played edenbridge ( kent & Surrey ) last sat & sunday. Pretty good nick for time of year. They have a deal of £37 a month each, 7 day if two people join together. Its a bit of a hike at 40 mins of country lanes but its a good deal and quite a nice course. I'll still keep looking.

i am no longer a member at a club as i have a 1 year old and subsequently less time and money than in the past.

The reason i first joined was exactly as you express; to take part in competetive golf on a regular basis.

I work at weekends so the midweek medals were the comps i played in most. I found that it definately brought a different element to my game, but not necessarly one that i would choose to continue with.

Playing the same course twice a week did improve my game, but did nothing compared to the enjoyment of playing a new course for the first time.

I did this for a couple of years and realised that i am lucky to have friends who play golf rather than try and make friends with golfers !

I am yet to find a course that i would be happy to play every week for the next 20 years that has a membership in my price range !
