Help for working out distances
Went on the practice range today to work on my wedge game to work out distances for full, 3/4 & half swings.
I've just stumbled across this tool on a site which will help anyone who doesn't have any guidelines on how far they hit each club.
It wasn't far off the one's I've done for myself on the range with my GPS..

In my humble opinion, distances within the 100 yard range are all down to feel.

I agree John. I'm hoping to make a few more up & downs this year from within 100yrds. That's why I'm working on my short game.

Hmm, interesting? Yes. Useful? No. Without wanting to appear cynical this is just another attempt to try and get some science into something that is, to all intents and purposes, incalculable for the vast majority of players. So, bearing in mind that the calculator takes no account of the type of club, type of ball or even atmospheric conditions, and you are only allowed to give 'woolly' values for your inputs (senior 50+, aggressive player etc what kind of values does it generate and how accurately?
If you stick to the standard input values and change one variable you get, for a 7 iron, a normal shot distance of 132 yds. Change this to male senior and a 7 iron gets...133 yds. Change this to an aggressive male senior and it goes to 131 yds.
It's just a standard calculation for a ballistic trajectory with a couple of fiddle factors thrown in.

I agree with Essex Boy, there are too many variables for it to be accurate.
I also agree with J.P. that from 100 yards in is mostly about feel and experience.
Oh by the way is that why the North have won the last 3 events, you sneak out your GPS.

Chris,
No sneaking, it's on view for everybody to see! You've still got to be able to hit the shot once you know the distance. Funnily enough the south always want to know how far it is to get past the ladies tee
I wasn't saying that the tool was accurate or that it should be used but thought for a beginner who is new to the game & hasn't or even thought of what there distances were it is a good starting point.

OK I can hit my 5 iron 185 yds, but I havnt a clue how far I hit all the others.( WHO WOULD SAY THIS? ). Ive been playing for 63 years and as soon as I get a yardage and compute wind, elivation and ground conditions into my little brain I grab the correct club within 3 nano seconds. After that its a bit up in the air but I never say should have been a 9 not an 8 unless I hit it wrong. I think the distance of my 5 iron would be the least accurate as its not the most used in my bag.
