New Year...New Irons

Posted by: user250721 | Sat 1st Jan 2011 20:59 | Last Reply

Ive decided to get myself a new set of irons this year as the ones I have been using have been a starter set from American golf.

So....where do I start?

Matt, if you are still making swing/set up/posture changes to improve it might be a good idea to wait.

Or try a quality second hand set that you can always move along if you don't like them.

If you are settled with your swing etc, get a fitting.

The other option is you could just blow your budget on what catches your eye. You only live once!

Matt,

Get fitted. I've been fitted twice & each time has seen my game improve. I've just bought the Ping I15's & my ball striking is getting near to where I want it to be. This & lessons I've been having is starting to pay dividends.

Matt

Be careful, i recently splashed out on a set of Taylormade R7s and even though i play alright with them i still strike the ball better with my old set of Hippos. Hopefully the more i use my new clubs the better they will become, or it could be an expensive mistake. If i could turn back time i would definitely go for a fitting....!!!!

My advice Matt, would be to get a good fitting from a local pro or an area fitting centre for major brands rather than the chain retailers as they can sometimes be keener to take your money than get you the right clubs. Once you know what flex, loft, lie angle, grip size etc you need you can then try lots of sets until you find the right ones for you and get them fitted to your requirements. There are always some great deals on last seasons irons to be had if you are on a budget. I bought a new set last year at just over half of the original price and had them fitted to my specs free. Good luck.
