Golf abroad
Anyone aware of the cost of flying your clubs abroad ? Anyone had a bad experience on the baggage reclaim ?

I think we paid £30 a piece for shipping 3 sets in the summer from Stansted to Malaga. (Easy Jet)
Remember the good old days when Sports equipment was included in the price and you were charged nothing.
So you can get a £10 return + £30 + ~ £50 taxes
Less attractive than it sounds.

Where are you flying to Colin?
To reiterate the comments above a lot of the long haul flights (Virgin, Emirates etc...) don't charge you.
Be wary of the low cost airlines though they like to charge over the odds. I'm currently doing an article which you will find on Golfshake very soon about 'The Cost of Golfing abroad.'
Whoever you fly with, each airline should have the cost in their FAQ's or somewhere on the website.
Any problems let me know.

Always check small print early.
What is the difference between £1 for seat and £40 to carry Golf Clubs, as against £41 for seat and Golf Clubs carried free.
I fly Jet2, may not be the cheapest, but when you can be in your house an hour after landing, it's worth it.

Just been going through this for a trip to the Algarve next year. It basically boils down to how much kit I'm likely to take, but basically I've a choice between Sleazy Jet (low cost) and Monarch (scheduled).
Basically Easy Jet would charge £73* for one piece of luggage and a set of clubs but only up to a maximum of 32kg. Bearing in mind a set of clubs in a bag can be up to 19kg this would leave 13kg for the rest of the stuff (although you could use a cabin bag for additional items). Anything over is charged at £10 per kilo.
Monarch you get 40kg allowance for £63.
Horses for courses really. Personally I tend to avoid Easy Jet and Ryanair, not simply because they are money grabbing, cattle herding bstrds ** but also because of what I know about their maintenance practices.
At the moment some flights appear to be offering half price luggage, so that would be £55 on selected flights.
So I've heard, not my opinion obviously for legal reasons, but one of my mates...

Hi Adam, were about to book a long weekend away at Murcia in Spain. Weve managed to get relativley cheap flights (not yet booked), but as some of the guys and yourself have already said this could all be offset with some heavy charges for flying my clubs over. How can airlines justify charging my me more to fly my clubs than actually charging myself. It beggars belief. I think it will pay to shop around on this one. Il keep you updated, could come in handy for your upcoming article.

If you're only going for a weekend Colin you could probably easily get away with just paying extra for your clubs and getting all your clothes, shoes, balls etc in cabin baggage. Just keep the bag under weight.

Just had a quick look.
Jet2 - LEEDS to FARO - 25th NOV = Clubs £15. Add that to the 0.99p cost of a seat. Not bad.

Ivan,
£132.96 to fly to Portugal and back with Clubs is still a good deal to me. I'd pack a Golf Carrying case full of stuff, dropping the price by £27.98.
