Divots ?

Hi all

Been watching the open on tv today i have noticed something i would like a bit of advice on

when i play irons shots say 6-pw i never seem to take any divots out of grass

but on tv and watching others on course they all seem to do, what is it i am doing wrong and is there anything i can do to help me

The ideal shot strikes the ball on the way down, then the turf.  This squeezes the ball against the turf and 'pops' it out.  To do this, you have to take a divot after hitting the ball.  If, like me, you skim the grass rather than taking a divot, you will typically get less carry but more roll.  You will notice that when the pros take a divot, the ball doesn't roll far.
