Ruling please
I got to play 9 holes yesterday and that was enough for me.
it was just a social round with 2 friends but an incident occurred that made me think it would be a good question for this forum.
We were playing the 8th hole and i hit my ball and stood back to watch the other 2 tee off. one of my friend went and placed his ball on a tee peg and took a practice swing, he then took a 2nd practice swing and knocked his ball off the tee, he put it back on and then took another practice swing and knocked it off again, we tried not to laugh at him but failed, he then took another practice swing and knocked it off the tee for the 3rd time. 3 more practice swings and then he stepped closer and hit it straight left into the trees.
What is the ruling

If it's a practice swing on the tee and he hits the ball , he can replace the ball without penalty and take his shot. even if the ball is hit 100 yards.
if its a practice swing anywhere else (ie: on the fairway ) and he moves the ball, then the ball is replaced for one shot penalty. If the ball isn't replaced then its a two shot penalty

"If the ball isn't replaced then its a two shot penalty"
Actually, it's worse than that. It's classed as "ball played from wrong position" and he also has to replay the shot from the correct position. And if the ball is in play, he would have to retrieve it as he cannot change the ball during the playing of a hole unless it is declared lost or damaged

As far as i understand the rules if he hits his ball whilst playing a practice stroke whilst being on the fairway then that is classed as a shot and he then should go and play the ball as it lies
if they retrieve the ball and place it back then thats when a penalty occurs

I though with a tee shot if the ball does not leave the tee box it is not classed as a shot. This applies when you address the ball and say knock the ball of the tee at adress not sure how you fare with a practice shot.

It is only classed as a shot if you intend to hit the ball. otherwise it is a practice shot. I suppose a bit of honesty comes into it tho !
