South Winchester 16th July
Fantastic news ..........
Confrimed with the Director of Golf at South Winchester that we CAN play off the White tees. 6750 yards
Apparently the course is in superb condition. The rough has been allowed to grow. The greens are super fast and the fairways are in tip top condition.
This is going to be a stern test of golfing ability. Not for the feint hearted !!!!!!

6750 is long enough for anyone and if the wind is prevailing then the majority of the holes will be into it.
I can guarantee that the scores will reflect the difficulty.

I have not entered the South Winchester qualifier, Wayne, as I am playing on the Saturday at Chesterfield in James Ilsleys Charity event and two days in a row is pretty tough for me especially with the long drives on both days.
The lads from Sherfield played there today and said that the course is in great nick and the greens are like lightning. The rough is knee high and will prove to be impossible to play from. Scoring will not be very high in my opinion, but then, what do I know.
Having said that, the course is a great one to play, with many very good holes and any par will bring a smile of satisfaction. Nothing is easy there.

South Winchester is an inland links type ourse, with very fast running fairways and greens.
For those of you playing in the Golfshake qualifier and who have not played this course I am going to run throujh my opinions on how to best play each hole. After all, scoring on every hole will be paramount.
1st - A straight par four to open with and centre or left of fairway off the tee is the best option to get a decent shot into the green. This green slopes from back to front and will be a test of ones nerves with a long putt on the first hole.
2nd - A nice par three, well trapped with bunkers, but with a nice bale out area left, which will kick towards the green. Another fast sloping green from left to right.
3rd - A downhill par five which will tempt the big hitters to go for it in two shots, although I doubt anyone will stay on this green in attempting to do so. Down the left hand side with the tee shot to avoid the long bunker on the riight and the sensible shot is then to lay up short and right of the green for a simple chip. An easy par five that can soon turn into a disaster.
4th - Two very well struck shots wiull be needed to reach this slightly uphill long par four. One also has to be straight as anything left or right will be in pretty thick rough.
5th - A downhill par four that has had a hole in one credited to it, but the hole is some 394 yards and a carry over a very large quarry type hole needed to get to the fairway. A struggle for me but not for the majority. The secnd shot is not easy in that it is downhill with very little chance of stopping it, so expect to go through.
6th. - Another par three with a pond to the right but once again this hole can be played safely down the left as the contours of the ground will bring it round to the hole.
7th - A long par five that goes severely uphill for the third shot. Care has to be taken with the second shot because the ground runs away very steeply down to pond on the left.
8th - Another dead straight par four slightly uphill and will require two good shots to get home. One of the easier greens to putt on.
9th - Stroke 1 and you will see why, a daunting drive trying to lay up as close to the water as possible, even then leaving a cvery difficult uphill shot to a plateau green that is well bunkered. On ly the longest hitters will get up here in two.
10th - A dog leg right where the corner is the line and should leave a short iron to the green and a relatively simple par.
11th - Par three but plays one club more than you think if one wishes to avoid the front bunkers.
12th - Into the wind this hole is a killer and anyone who actually gets on this green in three has played some great shots.
13th - This hole is downhill but trouble all the way down and once again two almighty blows will be needed.
14th - Starting to get tough now, with an uphill par four with a treacherous green when one gets there.
15th - Lovely hole, to look at but requires a lot of thought, Difficult drive with a large pond and OOB on the right, trees and bunker on the left. Even after a good drive there is still plenty to do.
16th, Relatively straightforward hole which is not too demanding.
17th - Par 3 with a deep bunker in front and large green.
18th - This is a nice hole to finish with. The longer hitters will have no trouble carrying the OOB on the left of the dog leg, leaving a difficult choice. Do I go for the green with all the trouble around it, or play safe. This is an easy par five but can bite if one is too greedy.
The good strikers are going to find that they will not hit many greens in regulation, so a good short game will be required. Those who have a higher handicap to help them should really forget about GIR and play the percentage all the time, to reap the rewards that a nice steady bogey round will produce.
Hope you all play well and the winner will have to have a bit of good fortune as well.
