NR is it a good thing in a medal?
The reason I ask is that for the 1st time in 3 years in a Medal round I NR'd on the 6th hole.
I think it was more out of frustration as I have been working on my swing to rid me of the Shanks & on the 6th (par 3) I just shanked it OB into the trees,
I took 3 off the tee & shanked that but it managed to stay out of the trees but with no way to the green.
Eventually by the time I got the the edge of the green I was playing my 6th, I then preceeded to fluff my chip which I then decided to pick my ball up & record my 1st ever NR.
Funnily enough after that I knew there was no more pressure & I played well!!
I was gutted but one of the chaps in our 3 ball said he NR'd 80% of the time!
What are your thoughts?

I can understand your frustration, John, but I can honestly say I have never NR'd in my life. Make it your one and only.
Medal is a different game from Stableford and has to be played completely differently.

There is a difference between NR and WD. If you walk off the course, say, because of injury then it's a WD (Withdraw). But if you stop keeping score or just don't enter a score (dont hand your card in) then that is a NR and not looked upon with favourable eyes by most.
I only once put an NR in during my Pro days, at Oakdale GC in Harrogate. Some of the holes were unplayable and so I stopped keeping score, but the guy whose Card I was marking played on so I did too, only to Mark the card though. I withdrew after 18holes of the 36hole event, as did about 20 others.

John,
I intend it to be my only one, as soon as I picked the ball up I was disappointed in myself.
Greg,
but more importantly I feel it to be really unfair on your playing partners.
I think it was more unfair on my partners to put them through the pain of having to help me look for balls on almost every hole!

John
I think recording an NR yesterday was a good thing a you enjoyed the rest of the round and played well. Put it down to experience.

"I think anyone considering NR'ing is not fit to play in any competition"
couldnt have put it better myself
the only people who NR are just mardy b*****ds who need to get a life
if your playing badly then just get over it after all its just 1 hole, its how you pick yourself up after the disaster
after watching the US Open and players scoring a 8,9,10 on the 14th hole, did they nr NO END OF they just got on with it
and like wayne says if you score 3 birdies on the first 3 holes do you nr for playing too well, NO you dont, so if you cant handle playing bad then dont play at all
personally i would find it disrespectfull if 1 of my playing partners nr'd

If one is unable to take the ups and downs of this wonderful game then perhaps they should find another game more suitable for their obvious poor temperament.

Wow,
some of these comments are a bit harsh!
In my case it wasn't just one bad hole, my round went like this.
Par 4 - score 4
Par 4 - score 9
Par 4 - score 6
Par 3 - score 5
Par 5 - score 7
Par 3 - possible score 8?
So I didn't give up after the 1st bad hole, I gave up because at the time there seemed no way my game was going to improve & I didn't want it to affect the other 2 players. Can I point out I didn't walk off the course, I stayed out there with my playing partners & helped tend flags, rake bunkers etc until the 18th hole.
Greg / Wayne,
How often do you play competitive Medal rounds out of curiosity?

I played a bogey competition at my club yesterday and I was all square after five, five down after ten with the game slipping away from me, but I still persisted in trying to play decent golf and ended up six down. I might add that the winner was six up with a 28 handicap.

Glad you didn't walk off John. Our other playing partner NR'd and walked off after 14 holes and had a really poor attitude towards the game.
