Hi Robert, If you have an i phone or most touch screen phones you can download software free and need spend nothing as freecaddie works fine for me. I also have a snooper sapphire shotsaver that doubles as a satnav for the car and gives a much more detailed view of the courses and layouts. The course downloads are also free unlike many of the other gps units. It's worth checking these fees out first as it can get expensive if you play a lot of different courses. If I were starting again the new garmin system seems to be a good unit.

I'm probably going to get the new Skycaddie SGX. My local store is hoping to have them in this week. At about £300 plus the £30 per year, it's not a cheap option. The previous version with a slightly smaller colour screen (the SG5) will probably drop further in price to a figure close to the budget you have indicated. Again though, there is a £30 per year fee for detailed course info. They are nice units though.....

Personally I can see no advantage in having this expensive luxury. Why? Well I watched the opening hole at the Celtic Manor 2010 Welsh Open and with all the information to hand in respect of yardage to the pin I witnessed both players way off the back of the green, a distance of at least two clubs out. If the pros cannot club correctly then what hope have we.
