What's the most you've lost playing golf?
I'm playing tomorrow against my normal playing partner and we've slowly been upping the stakes - It's now £30 for the winner (quite alot for me!).
So I was wondering - what's the biggest bet you've won (or lost!) on the golf course?

Will Marshall Jr be joining the South Team again this year? I would assume the North Team are all wishing to avoid him in the pairings!

I played in a Pro-Am at the Old Course, Vilamoura in 1976 which my team won. My Pro got a little drunk that evening and the next thing I knew was that we were playing a match the following day for £50 a man against Jimmy Hulme (Gullane Pro who once led the Open) and his partner Alastair Stewart (5 handicap).
We duly lost on the 17th together with my £50, but Jimmy invited me to partner him in another Pro-Am back home at Royal Birkdale. I was fortunate enough to win this one as well and have a very nice framed collection of John Player golf cigarette cards.

Darren , you heard right nothing new in me being beaten by high Hcp's in stapleford it's something you learn to live with.
My biggest loss was £90 which was a double or quits game ,My biggest win was whilst playing at Mertyle Beach back in 2003 over 6 rounds, I had a bet with a friend who was a pro gambler ,I played againgst the card £20 every day and had won five of the days over him. On the last day I was 5 shots off 2nd and 8 shots off 1st he offered 10-1 on me to the group (12) becoming overall winner . I took the bet as it was I was only playing with his money anyway at £20 (nobody else took the bet because of the quality player leading). I had not only passed 2nd but had caught 1st by the turn, I managed to hold on till the finish being 1pt ahead so £200 in my a#rse pocket. It was the most intense game I had/have played in golf. I also won the prize pot of £480, but alas you never get to keep that as the winner has to pay for the last meal and p#ss up on tour (you get to choose the venue) the £480 was no where near enough!!!
Edited : to late Santo!

The most I've lost is my dignity. Happens quite often too...
Reply : Mon 29th Mar 2010 22:16
Know what you mean about dignity. Smacked driver on arse soon gets you clenching just to make sure it don't go anywhere you can't get it out of.

Chris W - your two's sweep ? my group are thinking of having a 2's sweep when we go away in May . My question is if you get a two and somebody gets 2 x 2's does he get the whole pot or is the payout proportional ?
Reply : Tue 30th Mar 2010 11:41
Colin It should be divided by how many 2's are in if you have 2x2's you get 2 shares.
Reply : Tue 30th Mar 2010 13:02
A hole-in one should not cancel out the 2's, because it is not a 2, it's a 1. You enter a 2's Comp so it should be a 2's Comp.

Apart from the odd fiver I don't play for money but when I was 16 or so I used to play with a lad called John Barrett and we would regularly play for £10 and on £20 a few times which was a lot of money (all this was fields and policemen weren't so young etc) against anyone in the club who wanted to take us on. If my dad would have found out I'd have been in for it.

I was welcomed into the world of 'On Course Gambling' at a young age. I have seen £000's change hands over the years.
The nearest I came to losing big was the first time I played in one of those Money Matches, "£10 full automatics" was the game. I didn't know how it was played then so just went with the guys. On the 18th Tee we were by then "Square, Lost, Square, Won, Won, +1, Square and Square, this meant that we win £60 if we won the last but we lose £30 if we lost it. We won it.
Playing £10 Full Automatics could cost you a massive amount of money. If you lost every hole, by the time you came to the 18th Tee you would have already lost £1400, be -1 for £870 and AS for another £740 thats a loss of £3010 if you lost the last too.

From recollection a hole in one costs you money ,mine certainly did!
Ace's don't cancel out two's in either of my club's or previous one's that's a new one on me.
Lyth, no problems for you ,you had the game to gamble with!

Yes Dave, and it gave me a lot of extra enjoyment out on the course. Taking someones money out of their pocket can sometimes be better than winning Prize Money.
All you need is four guys, all around the same ability (not Hcp) and you can have some real Fun Days.

This is true Lyth , spent all last year dishing out fivers then about 5 weeks ago took the pot and our side bets £65 .That seem's to erased last year

thanks for your replies on '2's guys but I will be siding with Chris and the hole in one takes the lot - it's all very well playing this in club competition and with insurance your 'claim' for a hole in one can cover drinks behind the bar but in a 'social' event the ACE Man shouldn't be expected to fork out of his own pocket with nothing to show for it in return !
Reply : Tue 30th Mar 2010 16:15
Colin, a hole in one is worth every drink you have to buy.
Lyth, now that is playing for money. I thought I was jack the lad playing (and never losing) for £20.

I thought most clubs did the hole in one insurance? I was in a society that also did it though it was more or less used to subsidise the games and trips as was the other money raising activities of the treasurer.

Patrick,
Moor Allerton had a few guys who would play for a few 'bob'. Watch out for them, I know one at least is still there. A number of the local Clubs had daily afternoon fourballs, some well known. I have joined in ones at Moortown and Sandmoor. At Moortown what you lost on the course could be won back on the Snooker table, or you could double your losses.

I will David and the last two threads are timely as I got a hole in one at Moor Allerton last year. It was late so no one was in watering hole however I noticed the week after Terry Kane, the club captain had one and he left a bottle of whisky on the bar for anyone to have a drink. To my shame I didn't do the same.

"To my shame I didn't do the same"
Is that because you had already drunk it all mate
Reply : Wed 31st Mar 2010 09:13
Is it any wonder Yorkshire folk get stereotyped
Reply : Wed 31st Mar 2010 12:23
Stereotyped Dave? Oop north we call it shitfaced.
Reply : Thu 1st Apr 2010 09:45
Does this mean that all you people that have won money playing golf have lost your amatuer status?
Reply : Thu 1st Apr 2010 09:49
Don't worry John you might win some money some day
