Club or Clubs....?

Posted by: user244028 | Mon 8th Mar 2010 12:51 | Last Reply

Hello all

I've been playing for almost a year now and as I practice often and take lessons I've seen a steady, if slow, improvement.

I am currently in a position to spend a few pounds and I'm struggling with which way to go. My dilema is - do I buy a decent set of fitted clubs, or do I join a local club (I'm looking at Lee Park in Liverpool)?

I don't have funds for both and based on advice I've had before either of these options could lead to an improved game.

 Any advice is greatly appreciated.

 Thanks, Steve

Either route should see your golf improve.

Custom Fitted Clubs

I bought myself a set of Yonex clubs a couple of years ago.  Had them custom fitted and saw an immediate improvement in my game.

My original clubs had the wrong lie for my swing which meant that the toe of my irons was hitting the floor first, thus opening my clubface and producing my normal fade/slice shot.

The moment I tried my custom fitted clubs out there was an immediate improvement in my shots.  They went straighter for a start!

Join A Golf Club

Joining a golf club should see your game improve, but only if you play often enough to make it worth it!

I'm lucky in that I work evenings so I can get up around 10am and play 18 holes of golf before I have to go to work.  This means that I'm probably play two or three times a week during the winter.  The summer months will see me out on the course every other day.

One other option for you to consider is taking your own clubs down to your local pro/shop and have a custom fitting session.  They will be able to tell you what club specifications you need and they will be able to check your clubs to see if they match.  From the fitting session they should be able to tell you what your bad shots are!

If your clubs are close enough to what they say they should be then join the club, if not buy some clubs.

The problem is , if you buy some new clubs can you still afford to play regularly? if not then why buy them. I joined oulton hall in leeds which costs £50 per month for 5 day membership, and thats less than I was paying to play municipals on a pay as you go basis. I'd join a club and buy some good used clubs for less than £100.
