A 10 club event - what would you discard ?
Actually I have a problem deciding on what my 'reserve' clubs in the bag would be
yes most of us know what we have in the bag that we cannot do without but what in a 10 club rule would you finally decide to discard (it may help me as well ?)

I should re - phrase slightly combinations of 14 clubs could be quite extensive. I would just ask for replies in relation to your bag only !

I'd leave out Driver (as 3 wood can be used off tee & fairway), 4 iron, 6iron & gap wedge

Colin I tend to take only a half set out over the winter months, 3 wood, 3,5,7,9 and sandwedge, for me this still gives me a club for every eventuality, for example if a nine iron is not long enough and a seven is too long a have two choices I could hit either a draw with the nine iron to make it go slightly further or I could hit a fade with a seven to take a bit off. I think this also gives me a better balance to the set, the reason I take driver out of the bag is because where I play you can't get any roll out on the fairways in the winter so it doesn't go much further than my 3 wood anyway. but I tend to be more acurate with 3 wood. Give it a go I think you will find that your score will not be much different from when you play with a full set.

I don't change my natural swing at all when I play draws and fades. For example if I want to hit a draw, I would start by setting up as if I was going to hit the shot right of target, then I would aim the clubface at the point where I wanted my ball to finish then take my normal grip, I would then take my normal swing as if trying to hit the ball straight, the fact that the clubface is aiming left will make the ball draw with out having to change your natural swing.
Another way to hit any iron shorter is to grip down the shaft an inch or even a couple of inches. so you could hit a 7 iron the same distance as your nine iron by gripping down the shaft a couple of inches, still keep your natural swing.

Colin Coote, with all of those qualities you have just mentioned I assume you are a scratch golfer, perhaps you would be kind enough to submit a profile so that we can see where you are coming from, as I find what you said, something with which I am unfamiliar.
I play with many players who really can tonk a ball but when we actually get to the measuring stakes they find that they are not so long as they think they are.
Low penetrating draw shot hybrids suggest that you are a very powerful and skillful player.

Hi Colin,
Sorry to hear that your body is falling to pieces due to the cow falling on you. Myself I cannot blame my problems on anything other than a mis-spent youth, old age and general deterioration of my health.
I don't know anyone who can hit an 8 iron 175 yards so would love to see how you do it.
What is your handicap by the way, as it does help with any discussion if we all know ones capabilities or history.

bloody hell ! It's nice to see an introductory note promote discussion but I just expected to have comments on the clubs in you bag you use least and why that was ?
I think I will sign off here with a response to my initial note !
I am torn between choosing between my 2 iron and my "chipper" as accessories and so I would discard both - I like my 64 degree wedge even for getting out of bunkers so I would discard my sand iron and besides I always feel uncomfortable playing a sand iron off a hard fairway because of the risk of getting flat sole edge connection.
So that's 3 clubs gone , unlike some of you I don't think I could ever discard my driver (unless I was down to a half set - and incidently you guys out there should try to play with a half set you may be surprised as to how inventive you can be ) And my 4th club discard after due consideration would be a 7 iron !
