Interesting comment by Tiger

Tiger’s persimmon driver

Woods, the world’s No. 1-ranked golfer, hits a persimmon driver and persimmon fairway woods while on the range at Isleworth. He says he loves the sound, feel and feedback that it provides about his swing. The smaller head means there’s a smaller margin for error in the swing; this can be used as a training tool to help develop better contact. “If I ruled golf, we’d be playing persimmon and balata,” Woods has said.

I certainly agree with his last sentence, nothing like the feel of a persimmon to gender emotion in a golf shot.

Not sure if they were persimmon, but I used to own a 3 and 5 wood from ping.

The best shot I've ever hit was with the 3 wood.

4th at high elms, 220yds from the 1st cut, finished 2 feet from the pin, hit with a nice draw.

I hate this site, just made a long post and then lost on posting, so now I am really angry.

Jonny, the reason I no longer use my persimmons is because they are fitted with very stiff shafts from when I was able to play the game as a young man. I now need a lighter softer shaft and have given them to David L, to fit them with a shaft more suitable to my present swing speed. If he is successful then I will be using them again, simply because they have qualities that metal woods will never ever possess, the ability to shape a ball in either direction with some degree of accuracy.

You are not old enough to have played this game when it required flair, skill and imagination, all you have to do now is blast it a very long way off the tee, which you can do quite easily, leaving relatively short irons to the green. You would not know, or even understand the skills of yesteryear when one had to hit one and two irons into greens. let alone be able to flight it in nice and low under the wind.

You have come down pretty well recently but the challenge is still there if you feel that your skill level is not down to your driver length. I will play you off your drives level for whatever you feel you could reasonabley afford.

Danny, Pings were not persimmon they were laminated, but were still a very popular club with their unusual design.

I well know your capabilities having witnessed you play so I have no doubt that the 220 yard shot into the green was most satisfying.

It was a while back when I was playing a bit more consistently.

Surely that's got to be a 2010 challenge with Golfshake sourcing a venue

I might even come a long and film with some content streamed via the internet

Jonny, I don't need any persimmons as I have a driver (45 years old) a 3 wood of 35 years and a 4 wood of the same vintage. As I said to you they have very stiff steel shafts and even though I can still hit them they do not travel that far. I quite often put my three wood in the bag though. David Ley has them all now and he is looking around for suitable shafts for me, as well as adding some extra weight to my odyssey 2 ball putter.

Re our long running bet - Could I suggest that a possible venue for this could be on the Sunday of the N v S match at Abbey in April. Mr Ramowski will then be able to make his film.

It is a pity you have not put your name down for the South as we would have loved to have had you as part of the team. I would hope, though, that we can have a game before then, when the weather improves.

I doubt you can put your drives into any worse positions that where I currently put mine so I am more than happy to play it as it lies.

He'll guarantee you 26. He won't guarantee it will stop at 26.

Probably less John as you already average 26 putts around. I must tip my hat to you Jonny that's not a bet I would be prepared to take on as being beaten by him playing his own drives isn't unusual!! Good luck.

I could squeeze a day next week. It usually stays open in the bad weather.

Dave. I was given them in around '88 (my first ever set!), they were a couple of years old then so probably about the same age as yours.  Got the three woods, 3-PW and a different make 1 iron.
