Money is your handicap certificate, Eddy.

easiest thing is to wear a hat or sweater with a famous course on it and they will assume you've played it and wouldn't dare ask you for a handicap certificate
and that just covers the snobby lot most couldn't care as long as they take your money !

I have never been asked for mine, ever. I think in a way it's a bit of tactic to scare very casual golfers off decent courses, although in my experience it doesn't cover corporate events.

We played Millenium, Pinhal and Quinta Do Lago south earlier this year, the only club that asked about handicaps was Quinta, they didn't ask to see certificates (although we did take our GS ones in case) just asked what each of our handicaps were.

I played Oceanico Millennium and Pinhal earlier this month. I was never asked for a handicap certificate. Although, before I went, I did email a copy of my Golfshake certificate to the Oceanico admin team and they said it would be fine to use as proof of handicap. Never needed it though!
Both courses were in lovely condition as well. You lucky bugger : (
