I have a gap in my club distances

Posted by: user50657 | Sun 27th Sep 2009 15:38 | Last Reply

At the moment I have these in my bag and I hit the following distances;

Driver 260yds

3 Wood 220yds

3 Hybrid 200 yds

4 Hybrid 190 yds

5 Iron 160 yds

6 Iron 150 yds

7 Iron 140 yds

8 Iron 130 yds

9 Iron 120 yds

etc.

As you can see I have a 30 yard gap between my 5 Iron and 4 Hybrid.

Has anyone got a tip or tips where I can close this gap, or recommend a club that would bridge the gap?

Cheers guys!

I would have thought that with you hitting a drive 260 yards that your five iron should be around the 180 yard mark.

When I was a younger and better player my five iron I carried 185 yards.

In fact yesterday at Cotgrave I chased a  five iron onto the 17th at Cotgrave which is 193 yards from the white tees.

Graham,

You have a gap of 30yds between your 5iron and 4hybrid, but you have only a 10yd gap between your 3 & 4hybrids. Why not swop a 4 for a 5hybrid and keep the gaps even.

John I know what you're saying as I think the same thing. Don't know if it's something with my swing or the quality of my irons but I should be hitting them a lot further. One thing I do feel is that I hit my irons too high, maybe I have the ball too far forward in my stance with the irons.

Lyth, I've got a 5 Hybrid from my old set of Rams, and to be honest I used to love using it, but like my Irons I tend to get too much loft with it at the expense of distance. Used to land lovely and soft on the greens with it mind. I may take it tomorrow when I play and see how I get on.

Cheers

What about trying a five wood?

Is the gap noticeable when your playing Graham..?

260 drive plus 160 5 iron = 420 yards thats most par 4 gir's...

Unless your looking for a par 3 175 ish yards club and for that I would open the face on the 4 hybrid - in fact only yesterday I did such a shot the ball flies higher and less distance landing softly on the green - only in my case the ball nestling majestically in the greenside rough...

Robbie you'll have to show me that shot, the next time we meet up lol. It's just that kind of range I'm looking for. Seem to find plenty of par 3's which for me are falling between my 4 hybrid and 5 iron range.

Ditch the hybrids and get a good 3 iron, this will improve your ball striking and you may see your 5 iron close the gap!

It may be better out of the rough but a hybrid will never be as good as a three iron.

I couldn't agree more JP, I love my 3 iron off the tee at the moment! My hybrid is normally saved only for the rough stuff to save my wrists more than anything else!

Don't worry about what jonny says, David, he is a very good striker of a golf ball and has no need to use a hybrid.

I think the only reason I won Jonny is that I had left my driver home aswell and found more fairways with my 3 wood.... we will have to tee up again soon, I miss our little fourball grudge match

On the case Tim I geed him up to day to order infact , I know he will put an order in this week as we have had a few sets ordered.

Indeed, jonny, we do owe them a thrashing. Lets get it on.
