Standard length golf clubs? Do they exist?
Hi Everybody,
I'm told that there is no industry standard for the length of an iron or a driver! Is that right? If so, does it mean that Ping, Callaway, TaylorMade etc are all different? I find it hard to believe. Anybody else come acrsoss this piece of golfing trivia? If it's true then it makes a strong case not to buy off-the-shelf but have them fitted. Is it possible to get fited online and if so where's the best site? John

John,
The simple answer is that there IS a Standard length for each Club, but there is no RULE to say what they are.
Another bit of Trivial information is "A set of matched Clubs are all the same Height".

The max length of a Putter is 48" and it is not included in a "Matched Set".

Paul,
That is correct. The "Lie" of each club along with shaft "Length" means that a 'Matched Set' of clubs will lie at the same height. Then when you set up to hit the ball, you can address each Club in the exact same way.

Christopher,
The current R&A Rule states that the maximun length of any Club (except a putter) is 48".

To Custom Fit a Set of Clubs (Woods & Irons) you have to start somewhere.
Point X is the final goal, and the perfect fit. To get there you need to match LIE and LENGTH. If two companies design and build Clubs with different LIES then that will mean different lengths of shaft in each model too. Then too reach a persons Point X the change of LIE & LENGTH will differ from Set to Set.
