height with every iron

Posted by: user255203 | Mon 10th Aug 2009 21:02 | Last Reply

Hi, I've just started playing golf and I seem to be hitting my iron shots very high. I am hitting the ball straight but because of the height problem I cannot judge my approach shot very well. Any advice on this would be good.

Sam, Ive always hit the ball high and it does have its benefits (except playing in the wind of course). It seems that this is your natural swing so unless you want extensive lessons (which is as good a time as any if you're starting out but might not work as you may slip back into your natural swing) you'll have to work with it. Causes of hitting the ball high I've found are coming down too steeply and/or club head speed.

One thing you can check is the position your club head is pointing at the top of your backswing: it should be pointing to the target. If you're a right hander I'm guessing that your club head will be pointing left of the target.

Sam,

You say "you seem to be hitting your Iron shots too high", but what do you take this from. In other words What do you call normal?
