Fairway wood help

Posted by: user211211 | Thu 23rd Jul 2009 15:23 | Last Reply

Was hoping for a bit of advise with coming to a decision on what fairway wood to buy.

I want to replace my 3 & 5 woods as I bought cheapies when I started playing golf again and was unsure whether a previous back injury was going to stop me in my tracks.

Problem is there are so many diderent clubs out there and I am unsure what I should buy. I am after a club that can give me a second option off the T but can also pick a ball nicely off the fairway.

I think it would be quite dificult try the clubs out in a real round situation and also I just dont know what loft would be ideal.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I had a fitting session at The Belfry and came away with the Callaway Diablo 3 & 5.  Highly recommend them.  Long and straight off the tee or fairway, the only slight grump I would have is that they appear slightly closed at address.  Ping Rapture, Mizuno MX700 and Cleveland Hi-Bore are also good.

Try before you buy and if you can get to somewhere that will do a truly independent fitting session (I highly recommend the Belfry) then do it.  You'll be glad you did.

Get a low degree hybrid, far more versatile.

I used to have the La Jolla Knife 3 and 5 woods which I found to be easy to hit and usable of the tee as well. When I changed my Driver to the Cleveland Hibore xls I also bought the 3 and 5 woods. The reason for this was that I had tried the driver and it worked well for me and I took a gamble and bought the matching fairways. Turned out to be the right move as they are the easiest fairway woods to use that I have ever owned. Can't recommend them enough. Ideally you could do with borrowing a set that you are thinking of buying off a mate and trying them out on the course, failing that, do as Chris Perry said and have a custom fit where you can see the flight of the ball for yourself. As for your other post, Cleveland golf deal, I don't know if your thinking of changing your driver but the offer of free fairways with drivers??? Gets you the chance of a club for nothing
