Posted by: user26342 | Wed 1st Jul 2009 10:16 | Last Reply

With his new driver in the bag, a new found confidence & playing with an old pro what do we expect Chris to score today??

I'll start by saying 89. Chris will buy the nearest a beer!!

John.

You expect a Yorkshireman to get his wallet out? Behave! As long as I enjoy it I don't mind what I score.

If I really thought he would listen then I am sure an 85 is well within his capabilities.

Thsee were my thoughts as I read the header ,If he listens to John 84-86 if he does'nt 92ish I think JP could save 6-8 shots quite easily.

Cant remenber the exact details but I read in one of Bob Rotellas books about a bet that Ben Hogan had. He said that he could get a golfer who had never broken 90 to break 80 if he took Hogans advice on clubs and where to aim, baisically replacing an 18 handicappers golf brain with one of the best course managers ever.

I think the guy shot 78 or something.

Any chance of getting in JP's group on the 24th!!

You are already a fine player, Andrew, and only you will know what is preventing you from getting even lower.

I could easily offer my thoughts but you would find it very hard to accept it from an old man who cannot even play the game himself now.

"old man who cannot even play the game himself now"

He asking for advice from you John, not Dave Marshall. Don't you go giving the "I can't play the game anymore" rubbish. Everyone who has played you knows full well that you are still a good golfer. You may not have the distance that you used to have and may not be able to score in the 70's any more (mainly due to lack of distance), but as I said to you last time we played "Do not mistake an inability to play as well as you did as an inability to play".

That's the thing, I do know and it is described above!

Just before coming to the UK I was playing allot of golf and got down to a 6, finally realising it's not how but how many, and hitting it further down the fairway than anyone else doesn't count for squat at the end of the round.

Unfortunately not playing for a year or so once I got hear meant I lost most of that and have been struggling to get it back, it seems all to easy to loose the mental side of the game. I know I can save quite a few shots with better course management but don't seem to manage it when it comes to the crunch.

I'm always happy to take advice from people, especially someone with a record such as yours.

That being said I am always happy to play with anyone, just glad to be getting a game.

No one is more delighted to still be getting a game, Andrew. I think I will still be trying even when I have passed on.

Chris, a man has to know his limitations, especially in this game and I know mine.

Because of your natural power and the ability to reach every green regulation means that, mentally, your mind is concentrated on securing pars, when in actual fact, off your present handicap, your thoughts should be on defending bogey.

That has changed recently John. My view is now get it close to the green, rather than on, in regulation (unless on is a realistic possibility) and make sure I give myself a par putt. As long as I don't three putt or do something silly on the way to the green I should play bogey golf. Occaisionally though, the demons descend and whisper in my ear.........

Well, Chris, I hope to see this new approach of yours result in your lowest score.

I might add that you do not hold the monopoly of demons.

You were all far too low! There were three numbers involved and I think he did me 7 & 5 and by about 8 shots in the end!

I had a shocker, but I've been due one for a while. John didn't play well either but still wiped the floor with me. As he put it "we were both rubbish", to which I responded "yeah but you were less rubbish than me!"

In fairness, we both sufferred from the heat; it was draining. When it started cooling with around 5 holes to play we both improved. The company was good as ever.

The driving part of the game is not a problem for him, as long as you, I would say, John.

He hit the five wood beautifully, both in distance and shape, most impressed with the way he hit that club. Just wish I had that ability and I would be dangerous again.

Unfortunatey Chris has a tendency to introduce his long game into his short game, making it not so short.
