Looking at their website I noticed that the Green Fees are still way too high for the courses on offer. I would rather spend a week on the Kent coast and play real golf courses.

I was in Spain about 3 weeks ago and found that if you phoned the clubs direct you could find some really good deals at the moment. Example: Mijas, either of the courses, 40 euro's which included buggies. They seem to be struggling to fill their courses over there at the moment and as a result the green fee's are the same as about 2 years ago or buggies thrown in. Admittedly we only phoned up on the day but there did seem to be a big choice of tee times available.

I have always done that, Chris. I popped into Vilamoura Laguna, offered them 30 Euros for a game and they did not even quibble, even took the trouble to fit me in with other players.

Great deal John. Nice course too. Did you manage to play Millenium?

No, Patrick, I have not played Millenium or Victoria.
When I first went to the Alagarve in the early seventies there were very few courses. Old course Vilamoura and Dom Pedro (now called, I believe, Pinhal) Vale de Lobo and only one course at Quinta de lago. Add Penina and Palmares and that was about it. The only decent hotels were, The Donna Fillipa, The Dom Pedro, The Balaia Penta and Penina hotel.
Now of course there are many more new ones, the boom has busted and there are now more apartments and villas than punters and the golf is going through a bad time.

Having never been to Spain to play golf, one thing interests me about the current economic climate. I put this question to those who have been over recently or know people who have: -
- How are they coping? Are they dropping green fees or putting offers on to try to keep people coming? Are the courses suffering due to cost cutting on maintenance?
I know one of the better known courses was on the verge of going bust just before Christmas but I forget which one (may have been Villamoura).

Vilamoura (Old Course) is in Portugal, Chris, and is probably one of the courses that will always be well maintained as it has a membership of its own.
I have just had an email offering 3 nights SC accommodation with unlimited free golf on a course just south of Lisbon for 4 players in a two bedroom for £99.
This tells me they are all suffering and need to keep the income coming in. It costs them nothing to let you play for free as the course is there anyway.

Spain, Portugal, same thing, different flag!
I apologise for my ignorance, but it could still have been Villmoura. I knwo I recognised it and they said it was one of the older clubs in that region of the world.

Patrick, have you played Millenium, if so how do you rate it? a small group of us are playing it in August (we were due to play Laguna but have been switched to Millenium as Laguna is going to be closed for some reason whilst we are there??).

It is supposed to be a better cvourse than Laguna, Chris, so you are very lucky.
