South Winchester Friday 24th July
The idea to play at this course may have got lost in the mists of time, on another topic.
Therefore, just want to confirm who would like to come along for a friendly game.
Venue. South Winchester on Friday 17th July, tee time 12 o'clock.
John Pettitt will be doing the honours of booking the tee time. And will confirm the cost, as he can usually do some kind of deal for us as he is a Crown Golf Member
Interested players, so far, are.
John Pettitt
Myself
James Marshall
Tim Hawkins
Dennis Visser
Chris Perry
Paul Williams
David Ley, I assume, but he hasn't actually confirmed on way or the other.
So the question is...Does anybody else fancy coming along?

I'm a definite, the wife stamped my pass out yesterday! I'd prefer one of the last tee times for two reasons
Reply : Sun 28th Jun 2009 13:40

Reply : Sun 28th Jun 2009 15:33
Thats cool with me ........
Reply : Sun 28th Jun 2009 15:54
In actual fact a change to the 24th would suit me better as with the YMCA and The West mids it would have made it a tiring week for me. But I will go with the flow.
Reply : Sun 28th Jun 2009 20:10
I too would like to come down for a game. (That's if of course I can wangle a lift with Mr Hawkins !!!)
Reply : Mon 29th Jun 2009 00:16
Sorry chaps, can't do the 17th or 24th, will be in Corsica with the beloveds (well leaving very early on the 18th). Still want to do a game though but will have to pass for now...
Reply : Mon 29th Jun 2009 08:20
Unfortunately for me the 24th is a bit tricky, I’m coming off nights that morning, if there is a spare slot in the last group I might be able to make it but it would be dependent on how I feel when I drag myself out of bed!
Reply : Mon 29th Jun 2009 12:22
Can't do the 24th as I will be back up in Brum and will have the kids Majority rules and if I lose out then so be it.
I was sulking with Williams because he pulled out on me last minute. At least the missus came tround to keep me company.
Reply : Mon 29th Jun 2009 15:48
Chris,
your last comment has just made me chuckle, I didn't think you & Paul were that friendly
"I was sulking with Williams because he pulled out on me last minute."
that's just brightned my day, cheers.
Reply : Mon 29th Jun 2009 15:54
OK guys, just off the phone with the secretary at South Winchester.
I have confirmed bookings for three tee times from 1200 and a buggy for me.
The cost per head I have managed to get for £25 and I have had to pay a £50 deposit. (David will know all about that)
I will need definite confirmations asap, so that if we are short of a dozen I can try my own club to make up the numbers.

Paul,
Is this event for the 17th or the 25th of July? Dave Ley has told me that it is set for the 25th...which is right? Alfred

You were lucky Govan. If I hadn't had been in the first cut one of those boxes of balls would've been mine. Mind you, I've seen you play, you need them more than me......
Reply : Tue 30th Jun 2009 11:29
When I was told who had one the NP and LD at Donnington Qualifier I changed the prizes quickly from NP bottle of 25yr old bottle of Glenmorangie and LD a round on the old course at St Andrews ,I knew both were wasted on our celtic cousin Mr Govan . Two boxes of Srixons right up his street, any left Stu?
Shocked you didn't get a 2 on the NP though stuart.

I might have to see if I'm allowed down, but it depends on the little lady. Williams will be happy as we can share a car.

Yes, the course is a test, but I am sure you will enjoy it.

I am not traveling down to South Winchester just to donate to your coffers, David.
Reply : Sun 5th Jul 2009 16:33
Sherfield seems to suit the Marshall family too well, I will have to think of some cunning ploy to stop this continual robbing of poor people.
Reply : Thu 16th Jul 2009 20:31
Unfortunately, David Ley has had to withdraw from the game at South Winchester next Friday 24th July and I am therefore looking for another person willing to take his place.
An excellent course in every respect.

Very much looking forward to South Winchester.
The 9th looks a cracker. Lay up for a 5 or drive the lake for a 4? mmm Depends upon conditions on the day I guess. Hope the back is up to a full on drive.
On pic below the black arrow is 250yds of the yellows.

I have never seen anyone drive over the lake. It is a tough hole for sure.
Reply : Wed 22nd Jul 2009 16:33
Andy, what you don't see on Google Earth is the elevation and this hole rises very steeply from the lake to the green. A very tough hole indeed
Reply : Wed 22nd Jul 2009 17:36
Played sensibly, Nigel, no worse than a five should be recorded.
Reply : Wed 22nd Jul 2009 18:03
In the clubhouse, probably having a cup of coffee. I will be there early and I am quite sure you will recognise me.

On the way down to South Winchester thisa morning the heavens opened up like hell on earth. The M3 was a river. On entering the club I noticed that the 11th green was totally submerged under water and I really thought that the course would have to be closed. However, the greens drained very well and at mid-day six of us ventured onto the course with torrential rain still hammering down. The front nine was pretty miserable, but thereafter the sun came out, it turned rather warm and the rest of the round was fine.
Mr Marshall once again took the money with a very good 36 points, I managed to take second place overall with 34 points and Andy Kenyon with a 33 was third.
Kevin and Andrew Guyton did not fare as well, but then they do not have the shots to play with.
Andy played exceptionally well from the tee but was generous to us all with his rather errant short game. 24 handicap is way to high for his abilities
It was nice to meet Nigel Gray and he played nice and steady.
The course was its usual immaculate condition and considering the amount of rain that was dumped on it, the fairways and greens were superb.

They kind words John, thank you.
It was a rather damp start but turned sunny and dry for the end of the front and the whole of the back 9 and testament to the quality of the course that is was playable both during and after the heavy rain. What an excellent course it is too. Every hole a cracker with fast greens and gullies mounds bunkers and ponds in all the wrong places! That said, managed to avoid most of the hazards and hence can't blame them for my not scoring better.
Pleased with my round and it was brill to play with John and with Nigel too. As John said I was, on the whole, driving well. It was my own fumbling at the greens that put paid to a terrific round. Looking back, I frittered away at least 10 shots on just 4 holes by truely awful pitching and chipping.
By way of example. On the 15th I played a magnificant drive off the tee (even if I say so myself) of over 300yards to leave a short pitch to the green. 6 shots later the ball finally dropped and then not before I'd nearly taken David Marshall's head off on the 16th tee. Oh well, that's golf.
Great day. Great course. Great company. I so like this game.
Thanks all. Andy

The last hole at South Winchester is a par five downhill and turining left all the way with out of bounds all down the left and a green guarded by a small pond.
I decided to try my hybrid off the tee, a G5 19deg and hit it fat resulting in a straight shot of some 120 yards. I then decided that I would use it again for the second shot, this time nobbling it very close to the out of bounds.. My third shot I selected a five iron hoping to place it within a shot of the green and on the fairway, but the hooking gods were still with me and I nearly went out of bounds again, even though the shot was adequate for length. The GPS in the buggy told me that I now had 94 yards to the hole and being all downhill I selected my Gap wedge. I promptly struck the shot straight into the hole for a birdie 4.
Reply : Sat 25th Jul 2009 15:51
You tapped in from 10 feet and I tapped in from 94 yards, same result.
Reply : Sat 25th Jul 2009 16:14
I took an altogether different approach on the 18th.
I didn't want to overhit a driver off the tee so went with a 5iron which I promtly hooked onto the driving range and out of bounds. I then used the same club and did vitually the same thing again but at least stayed in bounds but only 100yds from the tee.
4th shot then was an 8 iron pitch over the corner of the range and down the hill to just short of the lake leaving 110yds or so to the green with the pond on my right. I then duffed the pitch short which promptly rolled into the lake.
At this point I picked up in disgust.
Reply : Sat 25th Jul 2009 17:56
17th hole, did not hit it hard enough to carry the front bunker, but managed to get out first time to the fringe, chipped up to within three feet promptly missed the putt left as I had done on about four occasions previously. In fact, David you were very fortunate to win the money. Andy should have won it by a mile.

John P,
Just like to say thanks for organising this, I had a great day even though I didn't play so well. Certainly is a cracking course, congrats to you and David for taking the money!
Thanks also to David and Kevin for an enjoyable round.
Sorry it has taken a while to post this...I have been in bed with the flu (not the swine variety I am hoping) since Friday!
Reply : Sun 26th Jul 2009 17:37
It was very good of you to turn up considering how awful the weather was. At one time I thought maybe they would close the corse as the greens ere all under water, but they soaked it up fine and the greens were fast and true.
Glad you enjoyed the course, should have suited your power.
Perhaps you will get down to Sherfield when we play next.
