Stephen, go for it.
What is the worst thing that could happen? You could come last, so what!
Join the event and enjoy yourself.
Don't put too much pressure on yourself.

Stephen, get into competition asap. It'll be good experience and there's a different etiquette to comps than friendly games so it'll be a learning curve too.

Steve everyone has to start somewhere and to be honest the best thing you can do is play in these comps with better players. It is a very good way to learn by analysing the way better players play a course i.e club selection, chipping techniques, just the way they choose to navigate the course when to attack the pin when to lay up etc.
No one (well aprt from Tiger and a few others) picked the clubs up and started to shoot great golf scores straight away everyone had to learn and went through a period of high scoring let people know you are a novice and you will be suprised how helpfull people can be and what good advice can be offered obviously not during the round but before and aftterwoods.
In my opinion playing can only make you a better golfer.

Steve,
It's called a high handicap comp for a reason.......everyone will be there or there about your standard so you will all enjoy & learn from the day.

Steve,
As someone who was an inaugral member of last years high handicap tour, I can highly recommend it. I actually organised last year's comp at the same course and it will really open your eyes as it is a good course but quite open in most places. 18 is a good challenge and if you manage to hit the green with your tee shot it'll make your day!
Many of the players have only played in these comps and feel comfortable because everyone is high handicap and do not feel the pressure of trying to keep up with better players. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly and you won't feel out of place. If you want to enter a friendly comp to drive yourself to improve, this is by far the best one for you to enter.

Last place at the West Mids event last year got just 4 points and the one before that was propped up with 7! You're picking up around 20 points per round Steve so you will be around mid-table and definitely won't be the worst there (especially if Cliff's playing ).
Don't worry about your score at all and just enjoy the day.
