Srixon Soft Feel
I tried one of these yesterday and was very impressed by feel, ball flight and distance. What are your general feelings on this ball? Is it just for seniors?

The Top Flites I use are most certainly puttable and are very easy to stop.

I played with a Srixon on Friday. Played the same course, same conditions on Sat with a Callaway and I'm convinced the Srixon went noticably further (225yds) with my drives. Didn't three putt either (usually I prefer a hard ball, Top flites).
Should I read anything into the fact that certain balls bounce higher than othes when dropped from shoulder height? I never fully understood what the differences and benefits/drawbacks were from high and low compression balls.

My Top Flites are the Z-Balata, which I have played all my golfing life, Balata balls that is. I also use a 90 low compression ball.
I am surprised you use the hard Top Flites though Patrick.
It is all down to personal choice in the end, one can learn to use any ball, but it will require a few changes in ones thinking about what shot to play, if one goes from one extreme to another.

I use Srixon Z-urc & Z-urs, they spin and stop very nicely. If you dont hit the ball a long way, the last thing you need is for it to stop!
I wasn't that keen on the soft feel.
I hit a provisional at my home course on the 18th as I had hit into the trees with my drive. The provisonal - a Dunlop loco that I had found in the trees earlier in the day (common theme!) - Whacked it straight down the middle 300 yards (GPS) must be all of a tenner for a dozen - what do i know!!!

I don't hit the ball a long way by your standards, David, but I still need to have the ability to stop the ball when playing into greens that are relatively firm and I use a soft ball specifically for this purpose.

Soending £1500 on shiny new golf equipment will not make one iota of difference to ones game. We all hear that it does, but I have not seen any drastic reductions in handicap due to new equipment.
Personally I would buy secondhand anyway

Thats my point, I use a soft ball to get it to stop on the greens but a cheap 2 piece "marble" seems to fly straight off the driver but rubbish for the rest of the round!

Hi everybody - try this thread for how to measure golf ball hardness http://golfshake.com/forums/view/480/Measuring_golf_ball_hardness_nerd_alert.html
Ok, I didn't have much work on then....

Sorry I made a typo in my last post: my drives with the Srixon went an additional 25yds (not 225yds). Regarding drivers: my daughter bought me a Tour system 10.5* square driver from a shopping channel £9.99 plus p £7p and I don't use anything else now. I totally agree that you're paying for the name.

Soft balls do not mean expensive. My Top Flite Z-Balata are less than £10 per doz. Now sadly not in production but I bought up a large supply for my neds.
The alternative is a nice three piece ball from Top Flite named "Gamer" which claims distance as well as greenside spin and shot stopping control. I have used them and they are just as good as the Z-Balata.

The Top Flite gamer is a nice ball (been playing it on and off for a while) - but it does look a little funny with the "dimple in dimple" pattern.
Certainly not the "rock flite" of old XL

Funny, I was given one yesterday to try, I hit every Tee Shot with a draw until I lost it when one didn't. It was getting up to 300yds out there with roll because of the dry fairways. I got out my usual Pro V 1 and boomed it 275yds in the air into wind with a completely different feel. BTW I hit each remaining Tee-shot with the ProV 1 with a little fade.
A very interesting result!

Srixon Recommended the Tri-speed for me too but they would do as they are twice the price of the Soft Feel and the AD333.
The top flite gamer are on amazon for £10.39 a dozen a £2-3 cheaper than the soft feel or the AD333 so I may give them a try, as they come highly recomended from John plus I think for the amount of ballsI am losing on a weekly basis that's more than enough to spend.
