Royal Birkdale off the Championship Tees and a local track Alwoodley. They are both tough, always in good nick and a pleasure to play.

La Finca golf course in Alicante. Championship course with tricky greens & all the usual hazards in the right places.
The 17th is a par4 but if you can hit any club 290+yrds you can carry the lake & get on the green in 1. Seen my playing partner do it once but then proceeded to 4 putt!!!!
John.

Panther Lake at Orange County National in Florida. What a course. Every hole is a different test of golf and has four different tees so the better players still have a challenge. Only cost me $55 to play and got a free hat and glove too!

Well, the best test of golf I had was Muirfield and I left the ring a broken man but lately I have to say my new club Moor Allerton, in the condition it was in last weekend. It has opened my eyes to what 'proper' golf really is. I can no lonfer afford the luxury of getting into a green side bunker (my previous club had bog standard up and down bunkers) as I may have to carry 30yds which is new to me. Also I have to think about delicate chips as the speed and contours of the massive greens are a minefield. The layout is great and tempts you into the more difficult shot, rewarding if you get it right but almost certainly a dropped shot (at best) if you screw up.
I like it that much I'm playing there this afternoon even tho I've got deadlines and unanswered emails coming out of my ears.

Wayne, yes, I'll look forward to it. The website is http//www.magc.co.uk and the good news is the green fee is £20-£25 for a guest. 18 holes takes 3.45 hrs but there's rarely any hanging about as three loops of 9.

Patrick,
So you are now a Member at Moor Allerton then.
I'd also like to hook up when Wayne comes too, I can also invite you both to Horsforth. In July a friend if mine comes down from The Glen and we play Horsforth and Fulford with the "1906 Club"

A wee hidden treasure that I have played several times is Boat of Garten near Aviemore, a truly wonderful golf course. it's tree lined, with tall firs, on every hole and the fairways are very undulating. Never had a bad round here which makes the course even nicer

Thanks David, I'll graciously accept and will keep you posted when Wayne comes over. Played quite well today but gross 85... was a bit surpised when I totted up but then again a few v nearly good shots ended up in a bunker and two bloody shanks oob one after the other on the approach to ninth.
